Bicycle Mechanics - Bar end shifter lever

Does anybody have a source for the shimano bar-end shifter lever that I broke yesterday???

Just looking to save myself some money and not have to buy a whole new set.

It is a Shimano SL-BS77 9 speed shifter and I am looking for the right (rear) shift lever.

These are known to be fragile. If the index housing has broken, you can replace it with downtube shifters. but they cost almost as much as the bar-ends.

A tip: when you reassemble everything, make sure the shift-lever center screw is very tight. Otherwise, it works itself loose, leading to damage to the index mechanism.

Jeff- i have seen a few broken bar end levers recently. Each with the same problem. The internals expanded to force the outer black containment cover to bulge out, friction mode still would work. I do wonder if there's a consistant set up issue that's not dealt with to cause this. I always considered bar ends (from ST ratchet units to Shimano SIS ones) to be pretty bullit proff in the past. Makes me think the "instant expert installer because of internet availability" (or other slip shod servicing) aspect is a suspect. Andy.

It's been a persistent issue for a couple years on the recumbent forums, where bar-end conversions are popular. Either:

Shimano's 9-speed bar-end shifters have a design flaw that makes them very fragile or
The assemblers are not tightening the hold-down screw tight enough, leading to early failure.

I don't know. I do remember that my bar-ends would work loose and the "friction/index" switch would fall halfway in between and cause some weird shifting issues. I cured them by really torquing the center screw- going well beyond Shimano's recommendation. My current 9-speed bar-ends work fine, but that particular bike doesn't get used much.
