Foo - I love when some one is smoking by the bike rack

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

There is a certain Safeway on my way to work where this ALWAYS ALWAYS someone puffing away at the picnic table next to the bike rack when I get there... which is why I shop somewhere else most of the time.

It's the Stinky Safeway on my way to work. There is always some random disgruntled employee out there by the bike rack smoking. It's never the same person.
... and yeah, I do lead a pretty boring life.
You breath more smoke when you ride behind a big SUV. Now HTFU.

Good call Ruben. I quit on the 1st of July. But in the meantime, if I can piss off some bikers, I'm gonna do it.

Okay, so you would rather them be at the trail head smoking around your vehicle. I can do that too, if it makes you happy.

As a former smoker, I can say for sure that there is almost no point to smoking AND exercising. Would you smoke while jogging?
And for littering, that's the main problem. Bic sells portable ashtrays, I don't get why people don't use them. Cigarettes aren't biodegradable, they won't go away.
I understand why people used to smoke (ignorance of the consequences) and why people smoke when they are young (invincibility complex) but I am baffled, constantly, by educated adults who smoke. Especially athletes.
Maybe you can shed some light on this, since you seem to educated, an adult and a smoker.

I smoke while bike riding. Why do people smoke, because it is F'ing addictive as hell and hard to quit. I started after blowing out my knee, overcoming an addiction to pain killers and deep depression that had me headed toward being an alcoholic that would've ruined my college and future.
There are lots of things people do that aren't good for them, but it is their choice and it is not illegal, so f'ing deal with it. I got so sick of people hollier than thou attitude with regard to smoking, yet most of them drink and do lots of other things that aren't good for them.

I see far more energy bar wrappers and even disgarded water bottles on the trails than anything else, maybe we should ban bikers from them.

That is fair enough. A person's decision to knowingly participate in activities that are chronically bad and will lead to death is a personal decision, and frankly its all well and good if that is your choice. As you do not appreciate the holier than thou sentiment, martyrdom is overrated. A person's choice to drink, or do drugs or participate in any other harmful activity is a personal decision, as I said before, but it stands out to me that smoking cigarettes is the only activity of such that exposes unwilling individuals to your personal decision and its consequences. The people parking their bikes didn't ask to participate in smoking, the people following you on the trail didn't ask to be caught in a headwind of arsenic and tar. Their personal choice was to be in open air.
Just because it is the lesser evil doesn't make it not evil.
When I smoked (real cigarettes), I never had a problem dropping non-smokers on a daily basis. I could had been faster if I haven't been smoking. But they could have been faster if they haven't been eating french fries. Besides, when you ride 30 or 40 miles daily (as I used to to back then), there's isn't much out there that can beat you.
There's a lot of misconceptions about smoking and nicotine in general. Trust me, I'm the nicotine freaking alchemist.

Maybe because the objects are bigger and more highly visible than a cig but....I highly doubt if you went around and picked up all the cig buts vs. wrappers & bottles...you'd have more trash.
I never said that it was okay to litter regardless of the object, the OP was about cigarettes.

People do drugs or drink and then get behind a wheel of a vehicle all the time.
And if you are outside, and are only in it for a short time, probably the risk is pretty low. But since you are so worried about safety, you probably shouldn't leave the house as the odds of you getting hit are better than what little you inhale in such a short period of time causing any actual harm.
Now I will say, I generally avoid smoking around other people as I do try to be courteous about it. The problem is, there are a lot of spaces left and I know at least around here, bike racks are normally also away from everything and out of the way, so for someone trying to be courteous, it is often coincides with a good spot to light up.
I am getting ready to try and quit for the zillionth freaking time, but I will always uphold peoples right to do something legal regardless of how dumb it is. I hate the nanny state attitude and people's attitude that their thoughts and beliefs and far important than others.
A lot of athletes supplement nicotine as an energy booster.
I'm the nicotine king around here... It doesn't matter if you wanna smoke it, vape it, sniff it, swallow it, bathe with it or stick it up your...your ear... I have the perfect recipe for any situation. Liquid Nicotine, Nicotine Paste, Nicotine Powder... you name it, I have it.

Nicotine gum is generally the preferred delivery for athletes. It is a good pre workout stimulant but my problem with it is the "band-aid" factor. If you're falling asleep at 2pm its a sleep, diet or exercise issue and should be resolved rather than drugged

I don't smoke. I do know someone that does, and he is one of the strongest riders I know. He regularly rides centuries on his fixie. No, not the invincibility complex of youth in this case; he's in his 50s, maybe even 60s.

Indy, that was not Mango's point. Her statement was due to the littering. Would fit anyone who litters on a path whether it be a gum wrapper or cigarette butt.
And you know my stance on smoking, but it is your choice to smoke.
It does peeve me anytime I see a smoker throw a cigarette butt out a car window or just walking. Smokers don't see this as littering for some reason.

A company called "Greenbutts" sell biodegradable cigarette buts. here (http://inhabitat.com/greenbutts-unveils-flower-sprouting-biodegradable-cigarette-filters/)
I swear everyone in the City smokes here. I work in the center of the City and even before I walk outside of any of the building's doors - I'm already in a haze - smoke filtering into the lobby from people smoking in the doorway, in the garage, walking down the street ---- they have a cig out in there hand as they walk off the bus in a hurry to light it! And on the way to the bus --- I walk by the front of my building and I'll walk two freaking blocks and walk by 3-5 people hawking cigs "Seneca's, Seneca's $4 a pack, loosies!". And then as I'm standing waiting for the bus - trying to stand out of all the smoke - people walk by selling cigs as well. And on the bus - gotta have those people who smoke right up to when they step on the first step - and butt the cig out on the bus and save the butt in their pocket. Now that reeks!
I still laugh though from an even a few years ago ---- kid puts out a cig on the bus and sticks the butt behind his ear and gets on the bus. :D Except the butt is still going ----- He singed a few hairs ...

I was on vacation on Kauai last month. Walking along the oceanfront lava rock cliffs, I was dismayed to see dozens of cigarette butts. No other trash, just the butts. Aside from being litter, the butts get washed into the ocean, the sea turtles eat them and it can kill them.
There is absolutely no reason litter with cigarette butts. If you want to smoke, pick up after yourself.
We pay a guy to collect, weigh and count cigarette butts. He's a genius.

Does he smoke? No, but every city around here uses him. He started welding outdoor ashtrays in his garage. Then he added the collection and reporting service. A couple of his clients asked him to refine the ashtrays; ours are stainless with full length hinges on the doors. Now he has a shop build the ashtrays and a staff that does the collection and reports.

True story: I went out on a relaxed, recreational club ride a year or so ago, and one cyclist who showed up was smoking in the paceline!!!
The leader finally had to ask this guy to ride off the back & not rotate through, because everyone else was complaining about the smoke wafting behind him. Prompted some club members to actually start explicitly specifying "no smoking allowed" when they listed their upcoming rides.

I jog on the Hike & Bike trail in town. While the path is open to everyone, it's still surprising to suddenly smell cigarette smoke. Less surprising to catch the occasional whiff of cannabis.

I think I saw one of those at the cigar shop the other day. I'll have to pick on up.
I had a cheaper cigar called 'Brickhouse' the other day. Powerful yet amazingly enjoyable cigar. I picked up another one for later.
