Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - Doing my first triathlon in August - excited

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

The wife asked me to do an olympic distance tri (1500m swim, 40K bike, 10K run) with her this August so I've been adjusting my training accordingly. Since I dont want to spend any more money on bikes right now I'm adjusting to riding in the drops, which I never do. Just doing that bumped my avg about 1 mph or so - little soreness in the saddle though from the adjusted position. After a whole ride in the drops it feels like you're riding a cruiser when you go back to the brakes/horns, etc.

Did my first brick workout today - bike/run - 20.56 miles in 1:10 (17.6 mph avg) - 4:10 transition - 5 mile run in 41:54 (8:22 pace) - 1 hr 56 min total. I'd like to avg 18mph during the race, not sure if that is going to happen or not. There is a lot of stopping and starting where I ride, which hopefully wont be the case during the race. The run was hard. I'm 245ish and it was tough to get going after the bike and I started cramping a bit at the end. My overall goal is to finish in under 3 hours. My best 1500m swim time is 27:05, which leaves me roughly 34 mins (figuring 30 mins for the swim) to bike five more miles and run 1.2 more - gonna be tight. If I can drop some weight by August it may happen. Wish me luck!

been a long time since I did a tri....and was never fast. One thing you may already know: If all your swimming has been in a pool and the tri is open water it is a really, really, really good idea to get at least one open water swim in before the tri, more is you can.

good luck

Thanks for the replies. Almost all of my swimming is done open water - I work on the river and our office is on a big lagoon, which allows me to swim at lunch, etc. I actually think open water swimming is easier due to the wetsuit. I'm in Oregon and the water temp where I'm at is 55-60 right now so you have to wear one. The buoyancy keeps me pretty flat in the water.

Thanks man. I train hard, but unfortunately, it was strength oriented for the last several years so I've put on a lot of body mass I dont need and am trying to get rid of. My wife is a marathoner so she's helped me w/the transition to endurance type sports. I was a Marine stationed in Hawaii back in the day, so I was no stranger to swimming and running:)

I just posted this on my facebook the other day:

"I don't understand triathalons. Why swim 1 mile, bike 25 miles, and run 6 miles, when you can simply bike 32 miles instead?"

:D

In all seriousness, good luck, heck of an accomplishment.

Maiden,

Not that I have ever done a tri...but let's just say I am one of those folks that reads a lot. I was thinking about our times and an article I read.

They were talking about training if you come from one sport (say running)

In other words on a scal of 1-5 if you are already running somewhere around a 3 (and you clearly are) then focus all your time on the bike. Races are most often won on the bike and if you are running 8:20 s. man you add a couple mph to your ride and your going to be badd a$$
