yup, when commuting, I am a big fred and I am ok with that. Commuting is about being seen and all about survival!

I dunno, the sun comes up at 5 am and goes down after 9 pm; there's light in the sky until 10:30 pm. I keep a set of ultralight LEDs on my non-commuting road bike, for when I go through a tunnel or whatever ... but lighting isn't really a problem this time of year.

That said, wheel lights are cool, and I'm convinced they help drivers who are about to join your path from a side road see you before they pull out through your line.

I would like to get soething like that for my cruiser. It'd just be fun.

I agree, just teasing :) I'm in the same boat as Seattle, I have daylight at 4:45am right now so my commute is beautifully lit when by 5:30am.

Define "Fred".

I've seen it but I don't know what it's about. I would search "Fred" but I'd get half of the database returned in the search, so I figured I'd ask :)

I run a PB super flash (on blinky) in the back and another generic in the back (on solid). Front i have a PB led 2 or something (on solid to see the road) and son other generic one on front (on blinky)

never thought about the side? i could put some reflective tape on a few spokes i guess. but i live in a urban city where every street is lit up.

Define "Fred".

Fred was a guy who went around the world on a bicycle, and then wrote a book called Around the World on a Bicycle. There's an exhibit about him at the Smithsonian. He was a fast and strong rider, but not very interested in the latest and greatest bike technology, just in riding his bike. But he was a bit of a weight weeny, refusing to bring food on a tour across the Syrian desert, because it was heavy, and it almost killed him. Fred is still with us today, and in his 90s.

When cyclists call each other Fred, it means "There's a person who marches to the beat of his own drummer. The guy is probably a strong rider, but you wouldn't want him in your group ride, because he doesn't really do those (and wouldn't want to go anyway) and so he doesn't have paceline skills."

yeah but when winter hits, you wont be so lucky with the light!

Luck has nothing to do with it - this is one of the reasons I chose to live here. ;)

seattle: We both know that the sun does not come up at 5 am all year around. I used to teach culinary school from 5 am to 10am and a lot of the time in the winter, no light was even around at 6 am. I lived in seattle pretty much all my life.

I use my two brightest lights on flash mode in the day as well, just because it is day light doesn't mean the driver is paying attention :)

And if you think about it.... darkness, rain, snow, fog, etc. All the lights do help.

I occasionally see a guy commuting who uses something similar on his wheels. He also has four headlights (two constant, two blinking), a helmet-mounted light, and literally a dozen blinky tail-lights along with lots of reflective tape and stickers. His bike looks like a rolling party! Can't imagine anyone would fail to see it. In fact, the light show is so interesting it's hard to look away!

These look like fun and would certainly draw attention, the turn off for me is the AAA disposable batteries. It shouldn't be hard to come up with a rechargeable system to run these things on. If they change that in the future I may consider these.

Just use rechargable triple A batteries.

Unfortunately, he'll probably get mowed down by some drunk that got the deer in headlights thing happening. Then the drunk will take off and when they finally find him the next morning with the bike still wedged under the car he'll be like "I thought I hit an animal" and get off scott free.
