Southern California - Jalama Road?

It's actually almost Central CA but it's closer to So Cal hence me asking here. Anyone ridden it? I'm camping at the beach there and thought the road out and back might be a good spin. It's 14.2 miles one way with a 1300 foot climb in the middle. I saw some folks on Strava doing one way towards the coast from Hwy. 1 in 42-45 minutes and some taking an hour and a half to almost 2 hours for the 14 miles :-o Is it that bad or are those peeps really out of shape?

The Strava profile looks pretty easy, and lots of people in the top 25 had power meters and barely put out 200w. I'd say the people taking 2 hours were out there recovering, doing a long endurance ride, smelling the flowers, and/or out of shape.

The guy who did it in 1:40 was stopped for about 15 minutes and was generally taking it easy most of the time.
The guy who did it in 1:45 walked part of the climb.
The guy who did it in 1:47 was stopped for 30 min.
The guy who did it in 1:52 was stopped for 30 min. AND possibly also walked the climb.
The guy who did it in 2:07 was stopped for an hour.

The steep section is not long, but it averages 8%.

Leave your bike at home that weekend and bring your board instead.
It's been a few years, but I remember the road was in poor shape and seemed like it was either steep up or steep down.
You can use any road to train on, but it's a better sightseeing road than training or Strava road IMO.
The surfing there can be spectacular. I'm a very good swimmer, but I nearly drowned on one wonderful day in '94 because the waves were too good to come in and I was exhausted and starving. Saw two boards get broken in one day there, and there were probably more I didn't see.

I used to surf at Jalama as a kid. That road is one of the most scenic and beautifull in the state. I think if I were to ride it, I would have to stop and take pictures.

I used to camp there when there were only the cold outside showers. Now there are hot showers and even cabins for rent.
Last time I camped there we had to get in a lottery for a spot and come back the next day after waiting all day for the drawing.

Thanks all. Yeah, the waiting list can be brutal, lol. I've only visited once and that was for a burger--which was insanely good, btw. Unfortunately, I don't surf anymore :-( Never thought that'd happen. I am going to surfperch fish while there. Heard that can be pretty good.

Nope. To the north is Vandenburg and to the south is "The ranch", but I have taken a ride along the rr tracks to the south.
