Actually, three speeds are plenty if they are the RIGHT three speeds. Take a look at the "flat footed" three speeds.

I talked with a local dealer who said he sold a lot of Electras over the holidays. Mostly to middle-aged or older folks who had not been on a bike for a number of years. This is an interesting trend...one of the few NEW ideas in bikes in quite a while.

Although a bit pricey, take a look an the RANS Fusion series of bikes. They are classed as a semi-recumbent. They are supposed to be pretty comfortable and easy to ride. The stepover might be too high though.

Without a tape measure, it would be tough to say. However, It seems like Citizen and Fuji (among others) have proven designs that could qualify as "Flat Foot" cruisers with the addition of a set back saddle. http://www.fujibikes.com/2005/images/bikes/photos_medium/regis_w_3.jpg

I've seen small people lower the saddle REAL LOW to the point where it's almost like sitting down on a computer chair! The boardwalk 6 model would be more than enough and it's inexpensive.

standover doesn't get any lower. i've had experience with many of them (my shop sells them), and they're pretty solid bikes. rather hefty, but definitley solid.

edit: we also carry breezers, which, for roughly the same cost as the biria (depending on model), are a better buy IMO. lighter frames, and i like the way they look.

If you haven't bought already, I'd say definitely look at a Raleigh... Gruv 1 or 2 ... I tried this, the Giant Suede and the Electra Townie and this was the only one with the pedals so far out in front that I actually could stand up.

Lowering a saddle does NOT make a bike a flat-foot bike. A flat-foot bike has geometry that allows for PROPER leg extension while pedaling, but allows you to put both feet flat on the ground at a stop. Just "lowering the saddle" will cause you to injur your knees.
