I am trying to sift thru the choices in a youth Mt. bike for my daughter...

Here are the choices I have found locally..

Trek Mt Lion 60 ($199- fixed front fork)
Gary Fisher Cosmo (suspension fork 50mm, $209-219)
Raleigh Rowdy ($199)
K2 Zed 20 ($more pricey $249 at one place)
Diamondback Octane 20 (Dick's and one bike store..$180)

Specialized (bit small frame for her already so we eliminated it)

All but the K2 have a steel frame. All have alloy rims but not all have alloy hubs. All but the trek have a front suspension fork. All have virtually the same gear system, same style brakes/levers.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

In terms of performance I doubt suspension forks on bikes of that price will add much but you might find your daughter wouldn't consider riding one without ;)

It might also be worth trying to find Giant's offerings, as I know they do a bike that 'grows' with the child.

I doubt there will be much to chose between the bikes in terms of components or build quality, but style or paintwork might mean the difference between a bike your daughter wants to ride and one she doesn't.
