Fifty Plus (50+) - Discouragement and Encouragment in the Same Day

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I had a very discouraging moment this morning followed by an encouraging one this afternoon. First, I got on the scale hoping to be below 180 pounds. I am at 184. I have been riding my bicycle and staying away from snacking at night. I started at around 194 so I know I am making progress.
Very hot and humid at work, sweating like crazy. I drank over a gallon of water to make up for what I lost. I did not feel tired at the end of the day. One of the guys I work with remarked that he did not know how I did it. He was sitting there all wore out and I still had energy. He is about 15 years younger than I am.
The reason is my bicycle riding and the small amount of weight training I do. It helps me to be fit which helps me to be able to do the things I want to do. It's all about conditioning.
His comment encouraged me to keep up my exercise routine and not to worry about what the scale says.

Scales mean nothing providing you feel right. Saying that-I am happier now I am 145-Aiming for 140- after spending the winter at 155.

Well done, and stay with it!
The circumference around your navel is a far more relevant measure of your health and fitness than your weight.
Encouragement and discouragement in the same day:
Climbing the longest, steepest hill (Parker road leaving Coupeville) on my commute home recently, standing on the pedals and torquing away.
About half way up a convertible new beetle climbs past me slowly, top down with two hotties in their late teens/early twenties and one hollers out, "NICE ASS!" :) :)
A few seconds later as they go past I also heard one say, "O crap, that guys old" :D

I too have an eye on the scale periodically. I started at around 198 lbs a year ago and yesterday was 187 lbs. However, three days ago I was 191 lbs. I've seen this happen before where one or two days in a row my weight will jump up by 3-4 lbs. I'm charting this in earnest because I'm starting to believe this is a monthly pattern. Biorhythms or something like that.

I just had to chuckle at that one. Maybe you should have shouted "HEY, I'M NOT THAT OLD!" Keep in mind that to a 20 year old, 30 - 40 year olds are ancient. Remember when we were that age.

Now I'm really confused. Got on the scale this morning, 182.2 pounds. I lost 2 pounds in spite of a big lunch and a bowl of ice cream yesterday.
My clothes do not fit me anymore, they are loose and shirts are looser as well. So the scale does not tell the entire tale.

My weight varies from day to day. I believe some of the variation my be due to variation in hydration. One pint of water is about 1 pound, give or take a little.

I would have but I was already out of breath and laughing. :D
