I left home at 4:40am and got back at 11:40. Average speed of 25km/h (indicated but that includes all my commuting as well) 30km/h slow cruise, bursts 35-40. I stopped to hydrate and eat within that time. Went through 5 liters of water, and 1500 calories worth of food. Still felt good enough at the end to sprint it. Which I had to do as I went from 24 speeds to 3 thanks to rear derailer failure. Not bad for my first try. Next time I do it faster.

Interesting side note - I was 86kg before the ride and 84kg after so even drinking as much as I could tolerate I still didn't hydrate enough.

Where you tired after the ride? If I do not drink enough, I am really tired after a long distance ride. I do not go by body weight but by how I feel. When I was training for the century, I tweaked a lot and nibbled and drank water every 15 minutes and used a timer to help which was great.

Congrats! Did you take any pics?

I find myself totally exhausted after my rides and I always assumed I just wasn't fit enough. Now I wonder if it has something to do with my water balance. I usually ride for like two hours before I come home and gulp in a liter of water. I'll start rehydration every 15 mins my next ride and see how I feel.

Yes water intake is key so is nibbling a little. I watch what I eat on hilly rides and long rides. Flats under 40 miles are easy and I usually only watch water intake. 40 miles of hills are a different story.

Set a timer. It will help!

Not tired after the ride, but legs are telling me about it now. I was nibbling every 15-20 minutes the whole way and drinking before I got thirsty. In fact I drank as much as I could stand. Still when I did have to stop to go to the bathroom there really wasn't much to get rid of so my body must have been using it all.

Got some pics but its only scenery. Great 40km car less (at 5am) stretch for road bikes though. Almost totally flat so on my mtb with dual purpose tires I was holding 35-40km/h the whole way without a single thing to stop for. If I'd been on a hybrid or road bike I could fly down that road.

Hybrid I think. Not sure my back could take a road bike these days. Its surprising just how much it hurt the next day for a sad little 20 miles extra on what I'm used to. Todays commute was brutal to start, but once I got warmed up things got better. More conditioning is required.
