I guess the title pretty much says it all. I rode the Menominee River Century Ride this last Sunday.
It was something like my 4th year riding it, but until this year never completed more than the 80K (53miles). This year we had a group of six riders (I'm the only Clyde). 2 riders did the 160k loop and 4 of us did the 80k loop. 3 of us did the 80k loop 2x. Follow that?
Anyway, the first 80k was pretty straight forward, though my legs were barking at me due to a "quick 35 mile ride" the day before. Stupid? You bet! Anyway, unlike past years I started hitting the gatorade and made sure to take in good things like a half banana etc at the rest stops, and plenty of water. One of the guys had these capsules from Hammer, electrolyte replacement stuff.

Earlier this year I posted about having problems with cramping and the like. There is none of that now, post ride. Nor was it ever an issue while riding. The rider that had the Endurolytes is a lawyer in the real world (and one hell of a strong rider!) and I was teasing him about better riding through drugs/doping etc.. And joking while riding saying stuff like, "It is okay officer, I got these little pills from that guy and he's a lawyer!" But zero cramping! And 2 years ago my leg cramps took me out at the 40k distance and I limped, dealt with cramps for days afterwords! This year itis a different ballgame, heck, I was even running wind sprints tonight with the kids I assistant coach for the local soccer league!
Anyway, I was able to keep fueled up and finish the damned ride! By mile 60 I was feeling okay, legs a little compromised but not bad. As long as I used the capsules and made sure to take in enough fluids etc I could ride. The trend stayed till the end of the ride when things like my sore backside, wrists, shoulders and neck were making themselves known.
Not major pain or anything I feel now, 2 days later. Just annoyed beyond belief and general irritability at everything. You guys who have done any level of long riding, at least long as in out of your norm, know what I mean.
I can tell you all this, better pedals, better shoes, double wrapped bar tape, schmutzing goo all over my nether regions before the ride and making sure to have adequate food, water and mineral intake while riding are absolutely a difference maker for me! The best part was as far as the normal discomfort from chafing etc, even with the padded shorts was almost non existent! In this respect, I felt the same as if I had ridden 20 miles with no goo on my junk and stuff.
As I say, here I sit, 2 days later and feeling fine and dandy with zero discomfort of any sort. Tomorrow I might even go out to the garage and look at my bike!
