Commuting - Bummed to HAVE TO drive to work this week

We are in the middle of a move (our offices) so I HAD TO drive to work each day and use my van to help out. We also have had a visit from Tropical Storm Debbie (12-16 inches of rain in just more than a day, Sunday-Monday, and rain off and on Tuesday) so I have HAD TO drive to work each day. I am really looking forward to RIDING in all days next week though (off on the 4th for Independence Day). Four days a week is great, but for me why not 5?! Our new office is soooo much further (4.8 vs 4.3 miles).

What's your mix?

Last week sucked for me. 2 days I had to drive to do jury duty. This week was good. Next week I have an off site meeting, so will have to drive in that day as well. Oh well. I usually use those days to refill my food stock at work by going to the nearby wally world during lunch time. I enjoy driving both cars we own as well... and if there are any errands piling up, I'll do those also - like picking up the dog food, going to the store for food at home, etc... in other words, make good use of driving into work, that way it doesn't seem to be so much of a waste.

I feel your pain. We have wildfires here that are making it too smoky to ride, so I'm stuck driving.

I wish I could do 5 days a week. I am usually stuck at 3-4 days. Tuesdays my girls have polynesian dance class so I have to get home "early". I usually have one other kid related thing to do during the week or I volunteer to drive so my wife is not stuck picking them up at daycare, my dad's house, everyday after work.

Regarding the extra distance on your new commute. Could you take a bus for that extra half mile until you build up to it? :lol:

I am trying to complete my first full 5 out of 5 week this week. It's Wednesday night, my legs are telling me to take some Ibuprofen, and the forecast for tomorrow is 102 degrees F. But I think I'm going to do it. Wish me luck, anyways....

SIP - a term I just made up - "smiling in public" on the bus comment (as opposed to lol). On the bike today and find that the last half mile by bike is probably 4 times faster than the va. I can cut through downtown, ride up the ramp to the front door and I am in. The van requires I take the main roads, open the parking arm, circle a few times to my allotted space, lock it all up, walk down the stairs (past those waiting to drop one floor on the elevator) and then over to the building.

The other nice part about the bike at work is I can hop on at lunch and go many more places to eat. Walking is nice, but limits the selection. I won't drive to lunch and the bus wait time woukd kill my hour (plus cost $4 round).

What a beautiful day too. The storm is gone and with it the rain and some humidity.

I sold my truck. If my company wants me to drive, I need to use the company vehicle or they need to pay for a rental. Fortunately I have the type of job that this isn't an issue. I don't think I'd go back without a significant pay increase at this point.

Personal van to move offices?

Can't the company rent a van? Or can they pay for the usage of your van to get some bike gear?

We had movers paid for to do the big stuff, but we all pitched in around the edges with our personnal vehicles. Certain things were best handled by us.

Funny part is that I get a reserved parking space, but will hardly ever use it. Too bad I can't sublet it! I did offer it to one of my co-workers at the old location though. Kind of like giving them my key to the executive washroom.:)

I'll probably need to drive once a month just to scare away anyone who will try to use it since it will be vacant a lot (it is covered and some are not).

Missed two days this week. Monday had to dump some construction debris from a bathroom remodel in the dumpster at work. (have companies permission, and that stuff is hard to get rid of) Wednesday had to visit companies facility in Tijuana, and am not hardcore enough to ride down there.

I feel your pain.
Gotten to ride quite a bit lately but have errands today that require driving. :(
