Hellooooo

I have an Aegis Aro Svelte that I bought a few months ago for $550, which is a steal. Bikepedia values the bike stock at $3495 (back in 2004). It does have a few upgrades, ksyrium rims, gatorskin tires, and a much nicer seat, so I'm thinking I could sell the thing for about $1000.

Money is tight... but I do need to get around. I don't have a car, so this is my means of transport. I'm finding that a carbon fiber road bike isn't the best commuter after all. I need something that I can hop a curb with (without feeling like the thing is going to snap in half beneath me), and that I'm not so worried about being stolen. I live in Florida, so I don't really need the gears either.

The Aegis was my first sub 20lb bike...and now I understand those weight wienies! What I'd really like is a nice single-speed. After a little research, I found the SE Premium Brew online for less than $400. The only problem is that is looks awful (before you say anything, google the bike... Seriously.). I would need a paint job to feel remotely straight riding in town. I'd also need a new seat, as the stock matches the frame. I don't exactly want to paint the thing myself (I really don't think I could do a nice job), so I'd take the thing to get painted. I don't car for fender or rack mounts as I have very nice clip-ons on hand.

All up I'm $550 in ($400 bike, $100 paint, $50 seat)...and this got me thinking. Is there anything better online for $550~? Could I grab a decent build for that kind of price? I am very keen on the Wabi Lightning (14.1lb! but price is too high at $900).

Thanks to anyone that can give solid advice.

Cliff - Looking for best single speed for around $550~. Possibly build?

I dont think trading a nice CF roadie for a cheap bikesdirect bike is a good plan.

You mentioned the Wabi Lightning is out of your budget, but have you seen the Wabi Classic? It too is a bit above your $550 budget but is seems to fit the bill.

The Wabi lightning is not 14.1 lbs.

This is 14.17 lbs:

Edit: you could spend $300 for an ENO rear wheel for your Aegis

While I understand that CF road bikes make sorta crappy around town fun beater SS/FG bikes(plus are more likely to be targeted by thieves), I don't understand buying a stock bike that you dislike and switching everything out. By the time you do that, you have spent nearly the same amount as the pricier stock one you do like.
I would either sell my nice bike & get what I wanted or donate plasma/sell my socks/eat Ramen exclusively for a month and buy a CL vintage steel fixed gear bike for $150 and keep my nice bike for actual road rides.

Money is tight, don't have a car, sell only form of transportation.

1) Keep the road bike. From a pragmatic point of view, a road bike is better than a FG bike for commuting.

2) Don't jump curbs. You won't jump too many curbs on a FG bike either.

3) If you want a FG bike, buy a FG bike. Don't make it seem like getting a FG bike is a practical decision. It's not.

4) Buy the bike you want. Don't buy a brand new bike and start painting it. You are instantly taking a loss. That's throwing good money after bad.

5) If you want a more durable commuter on the cheap, buy a used aluminum frame and move all of your components from your current road bike over to it.

Yes.

We mods would stop it as it is very annoying, but unfortunately it winds up being valid, if not the best, advice sometimes.

It is a running joke, but I wasn't joking.

Cliff - My sweet bike isn't hipster enough

paint your carbon flat black, make it fixed. Cool beans. Carbon is fairly robust, I haven't really heard of anyone snappin a frame off a curb... from the few fellas I know who ride carbon.

florida seems ripe with old road bikes. find a cool one with old school semi-horizontal dropouts. add a track wheel and bizango you got the perfect second bike.
