MORAL: Never ride down a steep down hill in a furious headwind.

The computer on my road bike keeps losing the top speed and only that. Perhaps it's programmed just to record the max speed for each trip?

It's annoying.

Did your top speed reset, or does your computer just show a lower top speed? If it's the latter, make sure that your computer is calibrated to your tire size.

it just reset i figured the battery got lose but my total miles is ok. i went out a bit ago and got the speed back up to 32 miles a hour. I also used my gps to see if its accurate seems to be ok

more and more I do not pay attention to speed when commuting. Too many factors like wind, etc. I like looking for flags. It will tell me if I will have a he11 of a ride going in (against the wind) or a real nice fast ride going home (tail wind).

i think i know what happened i recall yesterday i took rear wheel off to re-grease and adjust the bearings and had the bike upside down while doing it. I bet it must of been laying on the buttons for the computer

I use 2 different models of Planet Bike computers, and both reset the top speed with each trip reset. They retain the overall odometer, and the bike 1/2 odometer readings; but everything else is on a trip-by-trip basis.

I don't think any computer retains max speed as a permanent readng, like a video game high score that you try to beat on each ride.

I'm not sure about the OP, but I never reset the trip counter. I just let everything keep running -- the Sigma 906 and the Bell ??? let me do the "high score" thing faithfully, but the Specialized on my main road bike will sometimes show lower speeds when I check it (recent maxes?)

I think my bike computer (Bontrager W4) screws up on the average speed. The other day I had a particularly good group ride that was an out and back. We had a tail wind going out (I know, we did it backwards) and were running 25-29 mph on a course that was basicly open rural highway with only a couple of intersections where we slowed down. On the way back we had a good double paceline at 13-15 mph. We did have a couple of miles through town both leaving and coming back, but even there we were riding 15+ mph quite a bit of the time with a few slow-n-go intersections and a couple of stops. Short ride that day at 20 miles. Top speed 31.2 mph (no hills, just flat road and tail wind) but the average came out to 15.2 mph. Now I might be underestimating the effects of intersections in town, but when you do seven miles at say 27 mph, seven miles at about 14 mph, and six miles of 12-15 mph city riding, it still seems funny that the overall average came out that low. For the out and back of equal distance, the average should have been around 20-21 mph. We would have had to be crawling through town for those couple miles each way to bring that average down to 15 and that was not the case. I've noticed this a few times before when I've had long rides on the flat rural highways where speed doesn't change that much and there are very few curves or intersections. The average seems significantly low. Long rides that felt slow end up with about the same averages as good days when it seems like I'm making great time.

I'm going to have to start checking against a few other guy's computers on group rides to see how accurate mine is.

My strada cateye wireless does the same thing. The $10 computer I got from the department store doesn't though.
