Northern California - Cyclist mugged on Redwood Road in the Oakland Hills

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
As if the news of a critically injured rider who crashed there last week weren't enough, word is going round of a rider who was mugged while riding solo on Redwood Rd. I also heard from a teammate of a recent incident where two guys in a van were approaching his parked bike while he used the rest room at Inspiration Point. Apparently they turned around when he emerged to carry on his ride.
Here's an excerpt from a recent posting I received. The cyclist walked to the fire station on Skyline to report the crime on a weekday afternoon:
"This just happened at approx 3pm today. He was a solo bike rider. He
had just come down South Pinehurst and turned onto Redwood Rd. Just
past the Redwood Park entrance as he was heading up Redwood, a van
passed him, then pulled over, a guy jumped out to stop him. He was
able to manage his bike around the guy by going into opposing traffic
and continued as fast as he could up Redwood. The van took off again
after him and passed him again. The biker went to turn around and
there was another car involved who pulled up behind him. The guy
pulled a gun on the biker, took his gold chain necklace, then took the
bike and threw it in the van.
The van was a 2 tone gray (dark & light gray) 70'ish. It was like one
of those workstyle Econo vans with window in the back and the side
door. The car was a Nissan 200SX, possibly red in color.
Please let everyone know. This was a brazen crime and there will no
doubt be more until these guys are caught. They have a lot of victims
out there waiting with all of us who do solo rides on these more
isolated back roads."
Keep your eyes peeled folks.
That is surreal! Amazing desperation!
I ride there at least once a week, but usually other cyclists are around and cars as well , during the week in daylight!
Too bizarre!

Holy S&*^%&*^%!
This is unreal. I can only hope the next time they try this they hit on of those Second Amendment stand your ground types.
I was amazed to read a thread in road (or maybe is was commute...) about how many riders "carry."
Odd that they report the car types, but not the bike.
Anyway, that truly sucks. It must have been terrifying for the cyclist, too.

Dat ain't a mugging, it's armed robbery.
The guy pulled a gun on the biker, took his gold chain necklace, then took the bike and threw it in the van.

Yikes!!!
Did he get the license #s of the car/van?
And ... what's with the "gold chain"? I don't know of too many roadies who wear such a necklace ... was this a motivation for the heist?

I hate to be skeptic here, but this story just reminds me of one of those forwarded emails with outrageous claims that turn out not to be true (i.e. flash your brights and get shot for gang initiations). I'm not saying it couldn't happen, it wouldn't surprise me if it did, but where is the victim? Did he report to the crime? Who took the report? Where is the news story on it? So there are two vehicles of thugs driving around committing armed robbery on bicyclists? How many people were there? What did they look like? What kind of bike was stolen? A lot of gaps in the story. If it is true I hope the crooks get caught, but I wouldn't sound the alarms yet.

I see what you're saying - I felt it 50:50, but figured I'd rather post and find out it was a hoax than not post and hear about another one. What happened separately to my team mate pushed me onto the "post" side of the equation, combined with prior history on this road. I'm doing some digging to see if we can confirm/refute this stuff.
Updated (http://sfist.com/2012/06/29/cyclist_robbed_at_gunpoint_in_oakla.php) ... looks like it may have been somebody's imagination running wild (the "gold necklace" was the disconnect for me).
SFist previously published a post on an alleged armed robbery that took place in the Oakland Hills, via an email sent to us from a Berkeley cycling mailing group. We now believe that, alas, the story might not have a ring of truth to it. No one has been able to confirm it.

Scary, I'm actually hoping there's no truth behind it, but apparently Oakland Police are already investigating, and SFist did an update.
