Commuting - Happy Canada day

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm currently vacationing in Camrose, ~1 hour from Edmonton. Drove up here from San Diego last Monday via Banff, Lake Louise & Jasper.
Awesome vacation so far! I'm looking forward to celebrating Canada Day tonight & tomorrow.
Man it stays light up here real late. I really wanted to ride a bike in Canada but couldn't see schlepping them along so my younger son and I brought our scooters. Just finished riding around a bit.
Here we are rocking our scooters in Canada.

Megalowmat.
You should drive into Edmonton before the 11 pm fireworks. Anywhere along the city center area river valley would give you a good view, especially up top on the banks of it. But be prepared for heavy traffic, probably have to park a little ways out and hoof it down there.
Yup - fireworks started at 10:00PM and are still going! Happy Canada Day!

I am just a few miles down the road in Wetaskiwin spending the long weekend with my family... Good to hear you are enjoying some Canuckistani hospitality.
A belated Happy Canada Day to our friends from the north.

Wow Sixty Fiver you are close!
It's been an incredible time here and this is truly my kind of vacation. I love these small towns. We visited Meeting Creek today and "saw" some of my wife's distant relatives at the cemetery this morning.
The rest of the day was spent with a bunch of Canola farmers for supper, a tour of a farm and some .22 shooting and quad riding.
Tuesday we're off to Drumheller for the Paleontology museum and back in the states after that to head home.
I need to get riding again as I feel as I am getting fat!

With a little heads up we could have hooked up for some riding... :)
I brought my folder with me for the weekend as I cannot see why anyone would drive anywhere in a city as small as Wetaskiwin, the border is 2 by 3 miles.
Back in yeg today, could not have asked for a nicer weekend.

Cheers

Meeting Creek is one of my favourite places. I have a friend with a ranch/farm close to there. Great history re old steam trains etc. One of the last places where you can see real wood grain elevators. Man i miss them. How can you tell im a farm/ranch kid.
Camrose is a real pretty town. Glad you liked it up here have a safe trip home.
Oh and wait till you see the Drum.. Its like you stepped into a different world. Enjoy.

Isn't "Dried Meat Haul Road" around Meeting Creek somewhere? There must be some historical significance to a name like that. And a little ways north of Meeting Creek off Hwy 56, there's a little town called "Edberg" in a valley. The climb out of the valley in that area (heading north, anyway) is one B**** of a hill to do a bike. Especially when you're 280 km into a 400 km ride. Funny, that area between Stettler and Camrose, I've never been by car, but I have by bike a couple of times.

It comes from the Cree and Blackfoot indians who lived on opposite sides of Battle River. They made Pemican from Buffalo meat and the Saskatoon berries that are in abundance around Dried Meat Lake gave it its name. The lake was part of Battle River at one time. The two tribes fought often hence the name Battle River. Always loved that kinda stuff re:names etc. for places.
It would be a real climb for someone on a loaded touring bike for sure. I hear its great mtn biking in there though.

'Wish I had some Clodhoppers to celebrate with, but we can't get them down here in New York. Anybody in Montreal want to send me some?

Yep - saw "Dried Meat Haul Road" on the way to Meeting Creek and I almost stopped to take a picture but my mother in law was driving too fast. After all those dirt roads to Meeting Creek I accused her of taking us out there to kill us in some remote place. :) She was disappointed because her old farmhouse she grew up in burned down. We found out when we got out there.
Sixty Fiver - I actually considered starting a thread before I left to see who would be up for a ride but wasn't sure who all lived in the area. Looks like more than I thought.
Anyway, we finally made it to Great Falls tonight. The winds just outside of Camrose all the way to Great Falls were killer and there was a pretty good rain on the way. We'll be spending the 4th in Missoula in a nice hotel on the river.
It's kind of been cool celebrating Canada Day in Canada and the 4th of July in the US.
