but not me! Got ourselves a Generac back=up generator about 10 years ago, and it's running fine... a/c is on, water is flowing, food is cool, unlike so many of our local folks without one! Local gas station is out of gas. Our oldest son got a call from the WVANG about 3 a.m. this moring, wondering whether he'd be up for some emergency duty hauling generators: seeing as how he just got off his 2 week AT duty last Sunday (hauling tanks fron VA to the middle of Wv at about 50 mph), he said F@#! NO, and hung up. He called this morning to say his phone would be off for the next couple of days.
Sure is hot, and I don't feel great about people doing without, but my house is open to friends in need of showers, potable water, and all that kind of stuff.
Have a neighborhood barbeque to make use of the thawing meats too? Good on you for planning ahead.

Hey, I'm open to that, too... but I also have plenty of freezer space for friends in need; one of our neighbors plans to bring their whole freezer down here to plug in if thier power doesn't come on by tomorrow morning.
Some Ohio neighbors around here went down to West By God Saturday to pick up some ederly kinfolk. There power was down for the next 5 days and they would of fried in the heat.
I thought everybody headed for the abandoned coals mines or went up higher in the hills when things got hot down there?
Remember the West By God phrase:
"head fer da hills" ?

Just make sure all those frozen deer and turkeys have tags on them that go in your freezer or the warden will hold you liable for poaching.

not here, spry... the game warden is cool with garden-eatin' critters.... but my neighbors are more concerned with the steers they packaged up last fall!

Been without power now since Friday. Got all the camping gear out. My house was built before AC and so was designed for the angles of the sun. It's really quite nice how I never need to depend on AC but fans would sure be nice ;) We have a well too so no water since it needs juice to pump it. IF worse came to worse there is an old cistern that we could drop a bucket into and then filter it. So far all the stuff in the chest freezer in the basement is still ok. But I think we will be eating a lot of meat off the grill the next few days. There is actually another huge storm approaching as I type...

Our power went down Friday night when a 70 mph thunderstorm flew thru town on the way the Atlantic coast. About 130000 homes in the area were out of power including mine. We were out of power for 24 hours plus. Restaurants with electricty were packed that first night. The next am I bought and bucnh of fruit we could eat. It didnt need refrigeration and was refreshing in the 90+ degress heat. thnk goodness the evenings have finally cooled down.
I have no internet right now and am browsing with my pad linked to my phone using FoxFi.
I hope all other Bf folks that lost power are ok.
btw, work is without power so i am going riding on the Alum Creek Trail tomorrow . :thumb:
My parents have been without power since Friday. I lost power yesterday, 5km before the end of the tour stage. I was up in jfmckenna's town Saturday stocking up on beer and wine and got to listen to the locals there talking about outages. Seems like everyone is having fun with this one and the heat.

Stocking up on beer and wine is not a bad idea. It could be the rest of the week for folks far off the grid. I think we got ours rather quickly because there are a couple schools down the road. The storm that came through last night actually knocked a few more people out.

So, how many babies will be born 9 months from now?

The selection there with the Vintage Cellar and Kroger is far better than what I have here. Of course it's a good idea!

ummm.... 90+ degree heat is not really conducive to......:innocent:

Oh yeah I love the Vintage Cellar. They have great close out deals.

IT was also approaching 95-100 degree's, no running water, not even a battery operated fan. So I kind of doubt that.
I played guitar for about 8 hours a day to stay sane. Learned a lot of cool new stuff though :)

Their selection of Czech beers really disappoints me. I've tried to hint to them they need to work on that. Thus far, no improvement.
Otherwise, they're pretty fantastic.

OP~ how long will your generator fuel last?
I went home at lunch to take things out of my freezer and bring them to work. Got there and saw lights on in the building. Hopefully, it lasts.
no motor?

Our power was out in our condo building for about 3 days last summer after a flood and 90 degree heat. I don't ever want to go through that again, I feel for you guys.
Out here in the burbs, the outages were spoty. So some places were fine, and others the stores looked like a zombie invasion had hit with empty shelves in the batteries, flashlight and cooler sections.

we have free natural gas, so we figure 20 or 30 years?

re: free natural gas
wow that's a great idea, running a backup generator off your gas line.
in the northeast, probably most of the country we pay for the gas utility. how is it that you don't pay for natural gas? who installed the lines? don't you have a gas meter? who do you call if you have trouble with the gas? do you really have free gas?
I might be moving! ;)

West Virginia and Virginia have quite a few natural gas lines and wells. In many instances if there is a well on your property and someone is leasing rights to that well, part of the contract will include free gas access. There are 3 pipelines 12" dia or greater running right through the center of my family's farm. Those are too big to tap for personal use.

95-100 degrees...even my prudish family members start taking off all their clothes at that point. No clothes means primal fun times, regardless of heat or fanlessness. :D

rumrum - ha! that's one of the reasons we moved here from NYC 23 years ago! Seriously, there are properties available in WV that come with free deeded natural gas for domestic use; back at the turn of the last century, when companies were buying mineral rights, the then-owners of our farm sold thier mineral rights & reserved free gas. So, no heating bill, all the hot water one could possibly use, and we've hooked our Generac into the gas line so when the power goes out, we have power.

apclassic9 - wow you should just live off that generator and get a chevy volt, you know a plug in hybrid. then you'd have no energy costs at all! ever!

I've been lucky. Had power, cable, internet the entire time. I might ride Alum Creek tomorrow too, if I get up early enough.

DC WITH NO POWER IS NO FUN? FOR DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS!
Should be about 100 July 4th here in the Motor City. WIll be staying cool inside if the power does not go down for a while like today. Watch some tennis and baseball amd weather channel for fire updates!!
Can't bike ride anyways--had to sell my Klein bike recently to help pay medical expenses from my surgery last October. My story is posted at

generators are quite noisy... and those chevy volts only give you the 1st 40 miles on an electric charge... which would get me approximately... no where. The one thing about WV is that you can't really get anywhere from anywhere without a round-about journey; we measure trips in terms of minutes, not miles!

Beat me to it. ;)
Living on the Northern Gulf Coast means having a generator of some sort is a must. I converted my coleman gas generator to tri fuel (propane, natural or gasoline) right after Hurricane Katrina. Haven't needed it since, but that's a good thing. Generator and a window A\C can be a life saver.

Just checked the outage map at FirstPower... 1st to lose electricity here, and... last to get it back. We have to listen to that generator until probably Monday evening.
Sad we could not hook up Seimens steam power electric generating turbines to all those corn liquor stills running in West-By-God.
Be enough power left to light up pretty Christmas bulbs on the old steel bridge/immigration office over the Ohio river.

LOL... but the EPA would probably have a problem with the steam residue & its effect on the zebra mussel..........

On the shores of Lake Erie Zebra Mussels(found in the bilge of commie freighters visiting the great lakes) are an invasive species not found in WestByGod.
Did I mention WestByGod University did well in the college hockey playoffs this past season? Even have a few players from down yonder in your holler.

getting mighty tired of listening to that generator run! MonPower SAID we'd have restored service today, but it's looking doubtful - the branch on the line is still on the line, and nobody's been down this road to even LOOK at yet!!! When we lose power, it's usually for 10 days... they're exceeding themselves!

How noisy is it? The GF had her power go out last week for about 12 hours, and she's wanting one now.

We lost power once for 44 hours, during a heat wave in '06-- and this is in the freakin' Silicon Valley. Can't imagine 10 days.

WV only has state roads - even if it's a dirt track... I'm on WV 16/23 - 7 miles wandering through the holler. Not too many households on our electric service line (7), so it's never a high priority fix, hence the generator - we have well water & an electric pump, so we need it for water. For a 12 hour outage, I would suggest a portable generator, though - WAY cheaper! Portables can be hooked into the service box with a auto-sensor by a licensed electrician. Her power company would also have to send one of thier people out to check and approve the hook-up. The Generac-type back-up generators (Kohler makes then, too) would run about $2000 plus, and then there's about another $800 to $1000 in installation costs.
The WV National Gurad came through this afternoon surveying houses still without power, so, hopefully tomorrow?

So it's good the gas stations have power then! We have a well too and it really sucked not having water for 4 days. We had to go to a friends house to fill up. Mostly for the fish tank as their filter was not working had to change out half a tank every day to keep them alive.
