Andy Griffith has shuffled off this mortal coil. A TV icon has passed. Probably one of the best characters ever, in my humble opinion. I am saddened by this news.

"No man is an island, entire of itself ... Any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee."

Mine too. I will say that AG frightened the crap outta me in "A Face in the Crowd" and I ran screaming from the room whenever my mom cranked up the TV during the opening theme to "Matlock." That said, I got hooked on The AG Show back in the early 1990s while watching Braves' games on TBS when there were no Yankees or Mets games on here in NY.

I had watched it back in the 60s as a little boy (a wee bit younger than Opie, I suppose) but revisiting that show as an adult was a revelation. Wonderful writing, honest & likable characters and interesting story lines. The show has stood the test of time extremely well imo, and is right at the top of my list of favorites.

He had a very very good and long run. RIP.

:(

He's up there with Aunt Bee, Barney and Goober. I think the only ones left are Opie and Gomer.

YEah too bad, I watched all those shows when I was a kid. 86 years is a pretty good run though.

Same here. One of my internet buddies lives in the same town he lived in, and said he was the same nice guy in person he was on the screen.

There are really only a handful of television shows I like, and "The Andy Griffith Show" is number one. I grew up watching it, and I've seen every episode at least once or twice, and most I've seen dozens of times. On the bright side, he was approaching 90, so at least he had a long life.

Okay now I am sad.

Me too.

I grew up watching Andy of Mayberry. It really informed my view of society in some pretty weird ways. I tend to place people into a Barney box, an Otis box, a Floyd box, an Earnest T. box, a Gomer box, an Aunt Bea box, but someone I admire gets the Andy box.

awesome clip. That's the Kentucky Colonels, who I believe appeared on the show more than once...for you Byrds fans, that's Clarence White, pre-long hair and beard on gtr at center.

Earmest T. Bass is gonna get you, and you ought to be ashamed of yourself. You are a married man.

Godspeed, Andy.
That breaks my heart. Andy made one proud to be from BFE, The South.

Does this mean Barney can start carrying the bullet in his gun instead of his pocket?

His home town is Mt Airy, NC but spent most of the last years in Manteo, NC near the Outer Banks. I'm not sure most people would say he's nice - he wanted his privacy and got annoyed when people didn't leave him alone. My cousin lived there and was in a discount store and Andy Griffith asked him if he thought a sweatshirt fit and whether it would shrink. I would say he was very down-to-earth and wanted to live and be treated like he was nobody special.

Pretty much what I was going to post. The show has held up very well. Amazing what good writing and acting will do.
