Long Distance Competition/Ultracycling, Randonneuring and Endurance Cycling - Where do you start??
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hey ya'll! Three years ago I started touring on a whim; I've got on 3 tours, a 400-700 mile tour every year so far. I love it, I love the thrill of going somewhere far and fast(ish) on your bike. I just got home from my third tour and on it I started considering racing. What's the best way to get into it? I want to try it out, see how it feels. Should I join a team? Just find local races and enter them? How should I train? Any tips/pointers? I only own a touring bike, which is an all steel frame, about 30 lbs, and at this point I'd rather test the waters and see if I enjoy it before going out and buying anything that I'd consider a racing bike. So yeah, I guess I'm just looking for some general information and guidance. Thanks in advance! :)

what sort of racing are you considering? There is a racing forum under road cycling which should give you plenty of pointers. I suggest reading through this thread (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php/380788-New-to-Racing-Here-s-a-tip-or-two) before asking the kind of questions you asked in this thread. There is also a thread there about time trials. (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php/421441-Before-you-start-another-TT-thread-click-here) I wish I had read that information about time trials 35 years ago, I would have been a lot better at time trialling.

I was going to say 'wrong forum', but considering you want to go far and fast, maybe randonneuring is your thing. Maybe you can find a local club here: http://www.rusa.org/links.html

Oh! Had no idea that existed, popped in here since it is the "Long Distance Competition/etc" forum. I'll check that one out too I suppose, but I am a lot more interested in century races (or longer) than shorter distance races, so I'd still appreciate any advice.

If you want to do long distance racing I wouldn't necessarily suggest randoneuring. You can certainly "race" yourself but they are not really races. They are more like timed events with minimum and maximum average speeds. If you are looking at long distance racing then check out the Ultra Marathon Cycling Association. Lots of good stuff there.

A very simple entry point is to show up at a local group ride. Some of these are hammerfests, some just social. Lots of variation, but it is common for these to be somewhat competitive, yet not races. Just someplace to test yourself and see if you like riding with others. Look for longer rides of 60 miles or so, rather than 25 mile sprint-fests. Ask at your LBS.
