Was your experience good/bad? How did the outcome compare to what you had hoped? What do you wish you had known ahead of time?

We had $10k in renter's insurance when our building had a fire; the cleaning contractor our insurance provided went through and cleaned everything we owned until the $10k was gone, I wished I had known enough to put in claims to get some things replaced rather than let the contractor charge more to clean them than replacements would have cost.

Especially for stuff like broken computer equipment.

My Felt Z85 was stolen at work and USAA renter's covered it, minus the deductible. I had to send them a description and picture of the bike with a current vendor's add to confirm the price (didn't have the original sales receipt), then I itemized everything I added such as 105 brakes, a Serfas seat, Forte wheels, Vittoria tires, CF pedals, computer, even the new tape I just put on. Some of it I still had the receipts and some I just had to go online and print out the add from a vendor with prices. Came out to over $1600, minus the $500 deductible...they cut me a check within a week for $1100. Kind of wish I had a lower deductible, but it was very easy to do.
