Received word that three riders went down on one of my club's rides this morning. Two were taken by ambulance to Parkland Hospital, the areas primary trauma center. One of the two, Duane, was still unconscious and was receiving chest compressions when the ambulance left. Latest update says that he as a broken neck and is in very poor condition (likely critical condition). I don't want to consider the worst, but sounds like it's a possibility.

Duane is in ICU on life support, broken neck with a damaged spinal cord. The outlook right now is - grim. :(

Ugh...sorry to hear that Cuda. I've seen miracles worked by doctors so I'm hoping and praying they'll find one with Duane.

Sadly, even the power of Foo was not enough this time. Duane's family made the difficult choice to take him off life support this morning. Not sure if all of this has really sunk in yet. While Duane and I were not real close, we had rolled more than a few miles in each other's company on the club rides in the past. He took up the reigns of the DB2 ride after the long time leader had to step down to his own health issues. While reluctant at first to fill those shoes as ride leader, he was also very willing to help and always willing to share his experience and wisdom gained over years and miles of cycling. He will be missed by many, but never forgotten.

Damn. Words never seem to make the pain of the loss evaporate but I will add my prayers for his family. I have also hoisted a glass in his honor. God speed to you, Duane.

No cars involved. Seems like the 3-bike pile up with touched off by a simple touching of wheels or perhaps a road hazard of some sort. I wasn't on the ride and haven't spoken to too many that were. I don't want to speculate beyond that, but it always seems like the second person to go down gets the worst of it. Duane must have hit the ground in a way to do severe damage to his neck and spinal cord. I did hear that his helmet was deeply cracked, but not sure where the cracks were. The other rider who was transported to Parkland with Duane likely has a concussion and received a number of stitches and was able to go home late Saturday. The third rider was scraped up, but was able to continue riding and returned to the ride start with the rest of the group after they decided not to continue with the rest of the ride.
