I have to pick up my son from summer camp in Running Springs on Saturday afternoon, so I'm thinking of bringing my bike and getting in a few hours of riding before hand. Any ideas for a 40-50 mile ride?

I assume you mean road - I generally mountain bike at Big Bear. Check out either the BCI (bikeirvine.org) or OCW (ocw.com) website for route suggestions. The Ride Around The Bear route map would give you some options...
