"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - 3rd person view of my (mostly) successful seated attack

Thought the video was kind of neat so I'm sharing...

This was about 1.5 laps to go at the Hagerstown Challenge Crit 4/5 on Saturday. I say 'mostly' because I was caught just at the line and finished 2nd. I was sitting at the back of the pack and didn't want to wait for a pack sprint.

Actually this looks like a video of Jsiegs's crash that started a small flame war over in the Race Report thread. Bad line combined with a clipped pedal or a touch of the rear brake. A little more patience and he could have won that race.

Yeah that was a sweet attack! Definitely had some momentum!

I actually did the same thing this weekend from about 2k out and got a huge gap but the group didn't hesitate and caught me about 500m from the line. :(

there was definitely a lull in the pace...the guy who was in the front was actually taking a drink when I shot by, lol

I thought it was a flat, and that my race was over. I pulled over to examine it, and discovered that the skewer had come loose somehow and that the wheel was flopping around in the dropouts (the SRAM derailleur saved it from dropping free entirely). I could've sworn I had it on tight, but I did hit a manhole cover earlier in the race that knocked my left shifter loose and might've caused the skewer to come loose too. I fixed it, rolled into the wheel pit, and the officials allowed me to restart.

In retrospect, I should have followed your move, even if it meant sacrificing my sprint - I'd have had a better shot at the podium. Oh well!

I see a lot of "attacks" in 4/5 races that seem more like opera theatrics than real efforts to escape - full-on out-of-the-saddle sprints with lots of rocking the bike and whatnot but not a lot of acceleration. You have to choose the right moment. Looks like you did - kudos. Too bad it didn't get you the win, but all you can do is make the right moves and race to your strengths.

+1 ... they needed only to hesitate for a brief moment and the V was yours... the fact that you held them off despite an immediate chase, means you have good legs... nice ride!
