Commuting - los angeles, san gabriel river bike path

any socal bicyclists have an idea when the san gabriel river bike path will open again. still lots of water coming down the river. regards, henry

Normally, the public works will keep the path closed for at least 1 day after a rainy day. There are ways to get into the path even if the access gates are locked. Sometimes you can get in if you ride along the train tracks that run parallel with the path (some people have bent the chain link fence along the trail to get in).

NO, this path mainly runs along side the 605 all the way to Seal Beach. We used to do this ride regularly a few years back starting from the Santa Fe Dam. I never liked the headwind.

Path still closed. Hopefully it will be open by tomorrow. This is the trail I ride, Oh well.

lots of water coming down the san gabriel river. santa fe dam has much water behind it still. looks like one or two feet of water coming over each of the steppers north of the I-10. more water comes into the river towards whittier narrows. it is my commute path from el monte to azusa. regards, henry

OK, I know the one you're talking about. It runs along a "river", at least as LA defines a river. :) I think you can ride east from South Pas on Huntington Drive out to SG? As I remember, that river gets pretty full during rain. Can't imagine it now. There were always "breaking news" about some poor kid that got caught in a flash flood and the fire rescue would tie up cables to try to snag him. Yep, those were the days.

I'm sure the part of the bike path that was re-routed to the river bed under the 60 is under water. I haven't even tried to commute this year. The water level is very high.

I rode in on the San Gabriel River Trail on my morning commute for the first time this year.

Trail is open between Ramona and Peck. Based on the water level I would presume it's clear at least to the "locks" just north of the golf course.

The reroute under the 10 to the riverbed has been closed and replaced with a short tunnel under the freeway. Finally! Too bad it's not lit. Oh well...

See, the city planners and/or Army Corps of Engineers do occasionally have the cyclists in mind!

I take back what I said yesterday morning about the nice bake path. Put the one on the riverbed back!

As I get to the 60 underpass on the way home, I notice that is awfully darn dark in there! In the morning it was no problem since I had my lights on anyway. In the afternoon my lights are off, and that tunnel is a hazard. You can barely see the pavement.

To top it off, homeless are under the bridge on the east side of the bike path under the bridge. There is a gap between the east wall of the tunnel and the bridge. I'm not paranoid, but it's a perfect spot for an ambush.

I am going to complain about this. We need lights in that tunnel, and the right hand side needs to be completely blocked off, as the other underpasses have been. I don't want to get jumped.

I will make the proper contacts and let everyone in this thread know. We need to pressure someone to fix that tunnel!

The tunnel under Whittier Bl is even more narrow. It is also not lit. I've ridden through that under tunnel and nearly killed myself riding over a empty beer bottle. Just a heads up so be careful. By the way, the underpass by Peck is not that bad just stay toward the center. Sometimes people will leave junk along the edges of the trail. But the trail does seem to be drying out. Was there on Tuesday and the trail head that meets with the Rio Hondo Trail was still under water, at least the part that takes you toward the PR Golf Course. Maybe I'll post pictures next time...

beer bottles, trash, homeless. ride with caution along the river. ride safe. use your lights in the tunnels. regards, henry
