Speaking as the official BF risk manager, let me point out that these 'sleeper' or 'carotid compression' holds have resulted in death of the person receiving the hold. Especially so in the law enforcement setting when dealing with agitated, mentally ill, drunk or high suspects. There can be a very narrow window between 'putting them to sleep' versus killing them.

Should not happen if it's A) done correctly (that is, as a blood choke and not an air choke) and B) done on a healthy person. Passing out to blood restriction generally isn't dangerous, I've done it a couple times. Passing out to air restriction is very dangerous.
Finally, it's called a rear naked choke because it doesn't rely on a Gi or other clothing.
