MTB accident?

I dont have any other details. I assume its a mtb since all the trails are dirt.

On a personal note, the wife wants me to quit, and this just fuels the fire. I'm not quitting.

I've heard that a few times myself, I commute everyday and ride 1 weekend day for Rec. all the news lately makes her worry.
On another note lately I have noticed that if I commute with my jacket unzipped and flapping around I have not once had a vehicle buzz me, for the last month I have been doing this and it seems to help, I think from the rear seeing my jacket flapping around it must look either like I'm not going straight and I look much wider than I am :thumb: it seems to keep drivers going wide around me.

So sad ... so many incidents this summer of hit-and-run where the cyclist comes out on the losing end. When are we going to get angry enough to force our legislators address this inequality? Together, we are a large lobbying group.

That section of PCH north of the Santa Monica pier looks downright scary to ride on. There is lots of high speed car traffic and effectively no bike lane. I'd rather ride on the beach trail, it's usually not as busy with foot traffic that far north.

I commute everyday, and have been doing this for over 20 years. This makes it around 40 cyclist killed this year by cars in Southern Calif. All you can do is keep your head up, be aware of your surroundings, and never assume that the car pulling out sees you. Always be aware of cars passing you from behind. If its narrow and there are two lanes going in your direction, take the whole right land. Make the car passing you change lanes. I also ride with a club in groups on the weekend. Cyclist who don't obey traffic laws, who are rude to motorist, make it hard on the rest of us. Even though you might have the right of way, you will lose with a collision with a car. Be Safe out there.

I've noticed this phenomena also, and now ride everywhere with my bright yellow vest unzipped. :thumb:

My sympathies to the victim's family.

PCH south bound at the Entrada intersection is very dangerous - construction on the right, near some sharpish curves, no shoulder. I always wonder why cyclists stay on PCH for that stretch instead of getting on the bike path. In this case, maybe to avoid the homeless who camp near the bike path in that area?

This link says she swerved into the middle of the lane and was struck. You have to wonder if she was trying to avoiding road debris.

I hope she wasn't following Grant Peterson's tragic (IMO) advice to swerve/wobble slightly before the approach of cars from the rear. In "Just Ride", he posits this will make the driver perk up, and make them more likely to give you room, but I'm sure there will be a few fatalities resulting from this dumb suggestion. :(

It also says she was drinking... and it was probably dark as hell and she probably would have been hard to see at that late hour. It's still a tragedy. :(

There was a ghost bike memorial service in Redondo Beach today for a cyclist who was killed back in April after he reportedly ran into road debris. http://www.dailybreeze.com/news/ci_20427494/cyclist-dies-from-injuries-suffered-redondo-beach-crash

Quite possibly, but doesn't justify hit-and-run.

Or wilder than you are. All the erratic motion of something flapping is much more noticeable too.

Yes. Our eyes are quite good at picking up movement in our peripheral vision.

Movement is about the only thing our eyes pick up in peripheral vision. There is a reason why most car signals blink instea of merely staying on, and I've heard in the past some experimented with an alternating two-bulb lights to see if it was more perceivable than mere blinkadink.
