A quick search did not reveal the answer - Sorry if this question has been asked before.

I have grown weary of the cost of Campy 11 chains and of the bother of having the LBS replace them, so I am ready to move to KMC. That said, will an ordinary chain breaker open the Campy chain prior to my installing the KMC? I suppose that it would not be the end of the world if I destroyed the old chain whilst removing it, but it is not totally gone and I might one day want to use it again with a well worn cassette.

I know that this doesn't answer your question exactly. But have you thought of buying a Pedro's Chain Tool that will work with 8-9-10-11 speed chains, even the Campy 11 speed. You can find them for about $70 online (quite a bit less than the Campy tool). Installing a 11 speed chain is remarkably easy once you have the right tool. There are excellent videos online to guide you.

Just a thought.

a park ct3 will break the chain if you file it down. i just bought the park 4.2 and peening tool instead

I believe there is a technique for plugging the relief hole in the Park 4.2 chain tool so it can double as the peening tool.
