I just bought a pair of Reynolds DV3k and noticed that the cassette that I have in my Mavic Ksyrium wheels has a spacer ring that goes first. Do I need to put that spacer in the Reynolds/Shimano hub ? Or do I live without the spacer? I understand that SRAM cassettes do not need the spacer. Is the spacer needed depending on the hub or the cassette . Any help ?

The spacer is dependent on the freehub body. Mavic freehubs require a 2 mm spacer plus the 1 mm spacer Shimano provides with all of it's 10-speed cassettes. For most other freehub bodies, only the 1 mm spacer is needed. Try your cassette on the new hubs with only the 1 mm spacer. If the lockring pulls it tight, you are good to go.

Whether you need a spacer, and/or how much spacer is easy for you to determine for yourself. The cassette has to overhang the front of the freehub body by about 1mm so that the lockring can compress the cassette without bottoming on the freehub. If you've ever serviced a threadless headset you understand the principal involved, won't evern need to ask about any other hub/cassette combination.
