Professional Cycling For the Fans - Phil Liggett Got Me Drunk Today...

Decided while watching yesterdays stage to do a shot for every Phil Liggett misidentifed rider. Was drunk before the feed zone. Paul Sherwen now spends half of his time having to correct his partner. Personally I would rather listen to Paul Sherwen and Bob Roll call the stages.

I enjoy Paul and Phil but have to laugh when even I know who the riders are while Phil identifies them as someone else.

But that's half the fun of listening to Phil and Paul; sometimes they sound like an old, married British couple!

And look... Bobke's been the MAN for over 30 years, but those Road ID commercials... yeeesh! :rolleyes:

Phil got my name wrong while he and Paul were calling the race in my head on my way to work this morning.

To understand why Phil keeps his job, I think you have to reflect on why Americans loved Cubs announcer Harry Caray (though I hasten to add that I've never questioned Phil's sobriety).

I forgive Phil and like the Harry Caray comparison. Harry did enjoy his Buds.

I don't share the Bobke love. He tries too hard. He does have a quirky personality and is amusing but lately it seems he's trying to be quirky and amusing and that doesn't work.

Yesterday was hilarious when Phil would see Thibaud Pinot in his FDJ kit and exclaim that TJ, also in white kit because of the young rider lead, had launched an attack. Then a few minutes later when Nibali would attack and was leading Wiggins by just 10 seconds Phil would exclaim that Nibali was the virtual leader eventhough Wiggins had over two minutes on Nibali.

I keep getting annoyed when Phil keeps saying that "Garmin-Sharp was known as Garmin-Barracuda during last year's Tour". Damnit, they were GARMIN-CERVELLO. Garmin-Barracuda only started in January and lasted only until June!!!

He's done this like 4 times already.

I really liked seeing the photo of Bobke rocking the Lambchops! Who-da thunk!?!

Keep in mind that Phil is extremely far sighted. He has to have the monitor a couple inches from his eyes to make out anything. Remember that the next time he incorrectly ids a rider sprinting at 40 mph surrounded by other similarly clad riders.

I did the same watching Eurosport for every time Sean Kelly says "calculation"....its madness, the guy says it every 5 minutes....thank god we were only doing 7 oz beers!

I just want a CD/MP3 of Phil/Paul's calls mixed together, as entertainment and motivation on lonely rides. :)

If so I would have had to have done it on today's stage as Wiggins was leading out Edvald as the sprint wound up. Phil just totally locked up for about 5 seconds until Paul bailed him out. Awesome...
