I got referred to as a "Roadie" (complete with capital R) by someone who had seen me ride a recent brevet. I must admit it made me chuckle - for all I was using my then brand new SPD shoes and pedals, my hugely expensive (£7.99) jersey from the local discount store, baggy shorts over my Spandex (primarily for humanitarian reasons, although the extra pockets are handy) I'm still a fair way the wrong side of 200 pounds and was one of the slower riders around the circuit.

I had to admit having a bit of a chuckle when I realised the person the guy was describing as a "Roadie" was me :)

I've become a "roadie" sometime in the past year. I'm not sure at what point it happened, exactly. It's tough to tell. I swore I never would be one, and yet it happened just the same.

Was it when I started wearing spandex?
Or when I started using clipless?
Or maybe it was when I bought prescription sunglasses?

I have no idea for certain but when I switched to SPD-SL's last month, I knew for sure that I was now officially a roadie.

Still don't wear jerseys though. I want to but I'm unable to find any that fit. Apparently "4x" means "2x" to most manufacturers.

I think people who ride road bikes on the roads are roadies. I am, and I don't wear lycra or cycling jersies.

You're not officially a roadie until some yahoo in a pick-up truck yells, "Hey Lance" as he guns his engine while passing you.

Not sure what the UK equivalent is---maybe they'll yell "Hey Wiggo" after the end of the week?

You're even worse - you wear wool! That makes you a crotchety, throw-back roadie. :D Do you wear spare tires looped around your shoulders and drink wine straight from the bottle while riding? That'll take you up another notch.
