So a few weeks ago I was basically ordered off my bike by my doctor - Achilles tendonitis in both ankles. No biking, swimming, etc. Orthopedic boot on one foot and PT for the other. Once I can get out of the boot (at least another 4 weeks), I can start PT on THAT foot.
As you might imagine, I am going out of my mind. I am now able to ride 5 minutes at a time on a stationary bike with no resistance. This is not QUITE the same as a 10-15 mile ride with hills thrown in.
However, after a few days of being a complete mess - I am trying so hard to get healthier, being morbidly obese - I decided that I would use this time to get really good at the things I'd never spend time on if my other option was riding or swimming.
With that in mind, can you suggest a good book (or books) on bike mechanics? I figure if I can't ride it, rather than just staring at it longingly in my apartment, I'll figure out how it works and how to change things and basically become very intimate with how it's put together.
If it matters, my bike is a road bike and I ride as part of triathlon training. The running was what did me in. Apparently, running while being twice your ideal body weight isn't a great idea. Who'd have thought? So - I'm working on that as well - though it'll be much easier to lose weight when I'm allowed to sweat again!
