Commuting - Forget Steel vs. Aluminum vs. Carbon Fiber...try Cardboard

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

The idea sounds kooky, but the end product is impressive.

I love this guy!

He thought "Why not?" - and then built one. What a great thing.

I don't think I'd want one of his products, but I love that he did it.

Wow that is amazing. He pretty much made it as strong as any ordinary bike and impervious to water. I'd like to know how much it weighs. Uses ordinary pneumatic tires and front caliper brake. Awesome.

Well cardboard is mainly carbon and it has fibres sooo... why not just use carbon fibre (more refined and pure...)

Have to admit that is impressive, especially the appearance, wasn't expecting it to look that good.

I actually have two cardboard chairs that are anything but a "WalMart special."

Cardboard, when used correctly can be extremely strong and durable, while being very light weight. Aside, from the fact that the chairs are timeless and ultra-comfy, they make quite the statement when we have people over :D

Saw a guy with a bamboo bike at a charity ride a couple of months ago. Pretty cool.

brilliant. This defines "think different." What other materials could we use that aren't presently being used? Cotton maybe?

That's cool, I remember during my time in architecture school, a few studio classes built stuff like that (usually chairs) out of cardboard.

That is cool but I think aircraft grade birch ply would be a better choice ....

edit: and, to be honest, if this science thing doesn't work out, i'm going unemployed and to architecture school, for industrial/laboratory design :D

I can't remember the actual quote I heard once, but something about "once failure is not an option, everything else becomes possible."
When he decided to not listen to everyone telling him what couldn't be done. . .
My favorite line: "What I like about it the most--It's made of cardboard!"
Brilliant!
I love this guy!

Beautiful. Thanks for sharing the link. I've done my share of building things from cardboard, but it never occurred to me to make a bicycle.
