Classic & Vintage - A 151 Campy crankset, a fixie, and a bit of pain.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. I was at the local shop today when a hipster girl walked in with a powder blue FUJI fixed-gear conversion. The thing was spraybombed from the front to the back, right down to the hubs and spokes - but someone had masked off the rims. So be it, spraybombed fixies are everywhere in Miami, and initially, I didn't take any notice - it had SR bars and generic Dia-Compe sidepulls, standard cheap-bike-bait.

But then I saw the crank - a third-generation Campagnolo Record 151 bcd road crankset (not a track 151 - this was a 3/32" double running on the inner ring), with its original rings, hiding under 5 pounds of powder blue paint. I nearly fell out of my shoes when I saw it. I was about to offer to buy the crank in exchange for a single-ring crankset, but then I saw the extractor threads.

Someone had drilled the living daylights out of them. There were conical impressions all over the extractor threads.

Ouch. Not quite the thing to make a C&V'ers day. :(

I'm lost - what did they have in mind? Just felt like wrecking something, or was there some alleged purpose, do you suppose?

The only plausible possibility is that someone stripped the allen key hole on the dustcap and drilled out the remainder - instead of sacrificing the dustcap by slotting it for removal with a screwdriver.
