Hello, I just bought a 5 speed Schwinn Twinn Deluxe off Craigslist. It is a late 60's - or early 70's model. It is stuck in 5 th gear. It will shift down to 1st if you move the lever but then when you let go it just shifts back to 5 th. Any help on repair would be greatly appreciated. thanks, HLB

Loose shift lever? Can you tighten the screw that attaches the lever to the frame and get more friction? Have you lubed the cable and pivots?

I agree, it will be the shifter. There is a spring in the rear derailleur which wants to put the chain on the smallest cog. The front shifter lever should have a friction adjustment which resists the spring.
Newer vintage units have a ratchet or click mechanism to provide the resistance. replacement shifters are easy to find on eBay, Amazon or the local bike shop if yours can't be adjusted.
