General Cycling Discussion - WTB a helmet liner with a neck cover

Looking for a under helmet head cover with a protuding neck cover.

Doing a long ride in the heat and want to have something I can get wet to keep head and neck cool and covered from the sun.

Any help is appreciated.

I ride in Southeastern Louisiana and decided that none of the store bought items that sound like what you are looking for was worth spending money on. YMMV.

So, I made my own from a simple bandana and stretchy skull cap. I think it took me about 15 minutes of handsewing. Total ocst - free. I already had both the bandana and the strethy skull cap.

For a variation, for when I don't want the "skull cap" part, I used some double-sided sticky tape to attach a velcro strip to the back of my helmet ---- stuck a similar velcro strip on another cut-down bandana and voila, neck protection. Total cost, under $3 as I already had the velcro and got the bandana from a thrift store.

Use either/both with a neckwrap iced/wet bandana and I'm much much more comfortable than I was.

This is a recent photo of my helmet. While it isn't exactly what you are looking for, I think this technique would work.

I went to a store that sells fabric and sewing supplies and bought a piece of Felt. Felt is highly absorbent, I replaced the stock sweat-band with a homemade Felt one. The piece of Felt only cost 35 cents, and this is cut down, only one third the piece.

A bandana would work, but I have a feeling that Felt is more absorbent. The stock pads that come with the helmet are Felt.

I use a MC helmet liner in the winter, but cut down* and the neck-protector taped to the back and sides of my helmet.

*I must have a big head, I have the largest helmet I could find, but I can't fit the MC helmet liner under it.

In the winter, I cover all the vents with clear packing tape.

My girlfriend's 18 yr old son and I just rode PTNY's Cycling the Erie Canal, 400 miles in 8 days - lots of exposure to sun and heat. He wore a Headweats Protech cap:

I have a large head - 7 5/8 hat size or 61 cm or 24 inch circumference. The Headsweats Protech was just too small. I don't know that the visor does much - probably a regular UV Buff would work just fine. There are lots of ways to wear it, it wicks the sweat away very nicely, and you can dump water on your head for extra cooling.
