high mountains: 8-9 stages
less reliance on the alps & the pyrenees but not on the mountains. no more than 2 days apiece in the alps (give me the izoard!!) & pyrenees (luz-ardiden!!) with 2 days apiece in the vosges and the central massif (puy de dome for the love of god!!!). one summit finish in each set of mountains. total of 8-9 mountain stages with a mountain descent tt on something sufficiently lengthy & technical. make it the day before or after the 'queen stage' (alpe d'huez as a descent? lol).
flats: 4 stages
one seaside sprint stage with constant exposure to the winds
one stage with a nice sweeping approach (something wide enough to minimize potential crashes) into the last 300m so the boys can go all out once through the turn
one stage with a rising finish just long enough to give riders like gilbert/sagan a chance but not too steep to discount cav/greipel. let's throw some sections of famed northern france cobblestones into this stage
guess i can't eliminate the champs-elysee...even in my dream scenario.
tt's: 4 stages (including the mtn descent tt)
one ttt no longer than 25 km but rolling over a good mixture of flats & hills (burgundy perhaps?)
two itt's-one of them just long enough not to be considered a prologue (something like the monaco hillside/waterfront one a few years back with a great mix of climbing, descending and flat with plenty of technical sections), and one of 40-45k incorporating a little of everything.
rolling/breakaway stages: 3-4 stages
stages with a healthy mix of scenic towns, lots of cat 2-3-4 climbs, on skinny backroads with a prejudicial lack of straightaways.
i think i'd want to go clockwise with this one...
