Classic & Vintage - Schwinn Traveler III

Hi all- I was wondering if anyone can shed some light into what year my bike is and if it is original or pieced...

It has a serial number on the left frame by axle of a921249 which suggests the frame was made in 1959 but the badge in front says 0189. It says made in Japan for Chicago and its a Traveler III.

The picture shows it with a cover on the seat but seat I am assuming is original.

Your Traveler III is a 1979 model assembled on January 18, 1979 (0189 is the 18th day of a year ending in 9).

From Schwinn Bulletin 23, "Schwinn Bicycle Identification Numbers":

Bicycles from Japan have a production month letter in either the first or second position and a production year number in the other (first or second) position. Examples J677123 = September, 1976, 6J77123 = September, 1976.

It's the ladies' step-through frame (the smaller picture at the top of the page).

Thanks Stan- Was it an option for the handlebars or do you think previuos owner swapped them out?

A few parts seem swapped. The bars and the saddle/seat in particular

OK cool- Love the ride though..and rice was right! $20

I agree with zazenzach; the original drop bars have been replaced by tourist bars for a more upright riding position and the saddle for one probably more comfortable for the owner. You got a good deal for $20!
