View Full Version : Shoes for clips!

I'm posting this here cause I know a lot of fixie types are into the clips-and-straps thing.

I noticed that Nashbar is selling a few models of Duegi road shoes designes specifically for clips and straps. They're running like 20-25 dollars. Most of them look pretty cool, too. It seems like a good way to have a proper setup with clips and straps! Plus I guess it beats trying to figure out which sneakers fit into the clips the best.

I'm thinking about picking some up.

i have been eyeing these this week....but there are plenty of more on zappos.com

http://www.zappos.com/n/p/dp/3649685/c/18821.html

the only thing that has stopped me has been their description....

"A thin gull-length insert provides maximum pedaling efficiency for bike messengers and other adventurous types."

just sounds cheesy.....but the shoe looks dope...

I find that my running shoes deform, don't know how to explain it but they kind look like I dug my foot into the ground and pushed sideways against my foot away from me. I usually stick with whatever I wear for BMX (Vans and Globes right now) or Pumas.

Nice heads up, I could use a pair of those. Sad thing is, I don't think most people here understand slotted cleats and clips and straps. A nightmare to walk in but that's not what they are for.

...and most cycling shoes made for cycling have bottoms that are not to cool to walk on for distances more than a couple of blocks....and as far as having a few drinks and walking around....forget about it....

cause you're right, they are made for cycling, not walking around...

i picked up these a couple of months ago, a retro cycling shoe. i can ride all day or walk around all day or work in em' they're that comfy....

they are just too many retro cycling shoes out now to wear cycling shoes that are designed for cleats

Puma has a new retro/classic remake of their olympic cyclist shoe on their website. The model name is "ventoux". These might be my next pair of kicks, although I still love rocking the adidas superstar 1's (the originals baby!).

I believe it's called the Tuscany, and you might still find a pair at Footlocker or similar sporting good places. If not, they'll be back on the shelves in a few months.

There's also several diff't versions of it too (colors, materials, etc.) but basically it's the same design.

I wear the Samba or TopSalas with platform pedals too. They have that torsion arch thing to make the midsole of the shoe not flex when you're cranking.

Those shoes karmical linked are pretty nice too. They have the a plastic shank running through them for the same reason.

Sambas where made for indoor soccer, right? I would think that the balls of the feet flex a good amount- the gum rubber doesen't seem to be stiff enough.
Does Adidas' Torsion Arch thing really help the shoe to stay stiffer where you need it- in the ball to the arch?

they're not specifically for riding, but i usually wear Asics Onitsuka Tigers. most of the models are completely synthetic, the soles are pretty stiff, and the toes are somewhat narrow which makes it easy to get in and out of clips...

Not as much as a regular cycling shoe, but compared to my Vans, there's a noticable difference. YMMV, depending on your tastes.

I'm a big fan of Jack Purcells. Flat soles, big rubber toe cap doesn't get chewed up by the clips. They're a little bit stiffer than regular chucks, which is nice for riding. I need a new pair, though.

I was going to try this, but then realized that they would be the worst clipless shoes ever. The sole has no stiffness at all, plus you would probably rip the shoe apart as soon as you try to skid. :(

its funny with all the tech talk in here.. and particulars to the entire set up of the bike.. that theres so much "all you need is some sneakers, dude" attitude.. if you havent tried bike shoes, you should.. especially with cleats.. adds as much fun as a new set of bars or wheels.. i know.. y'all are so anti fashion.. just think of it as more gear... cause it is.. think of a biking shoe with a cleat as a fancy stiff platform pedal that you attach yourself too.. and before you chew me out.. i ride with sneaks sometimes too.. Adidas campus to be specific... all im saying is try a bike shoe once..and get a stiff one.

I totally agree, going from sneakers to cycling shoes is a huge upgrade, both in comfort and performance.

Anybody hook up with the nashbar/duegi deal? I did, and am really happy with the shoes, especially for twenty bucks, I'll probably get another pair. Weird thing is, nashbar lists them as a reissue of old shoes, but I'm pretty sure that the ones I got are NOS. The box is definitely fifteen or twenty years old, and the cleat tool is a little rusty, but the shoes are fine.

Thank you again to the original poster for the heads up.

first, you put on your oldest, most ragged pair of painting shoes you don't want to ever see again.

Then you ride to the bowling alley.

For a small fee, you trade in your old shoes and wear your new riding shoes home.

Be careful on wet tile floors with them and don't forget to remove the numbers...

I used to ride clips with Sidis but got tired of changing shoes when I got to the skate spot. I said F-it and just rode with clips for the last 2 years. It feels like my skating is just transfered over onto my track bike. I also wanted to support slave labor by going with these.

Interesting you should say that. I actually have a purloined pair of bowling shoes. See pic. The alley I got them from doesn't require you to leave a shoe (or two) to get the bowling shoes.

The stiff soles would probably be fantastic for riding, but the one time I tried, the bottoms were so utterly gripless that I couldn't flip the pedals over for the life of me. Obviously this would not be a problem for a bike with a freewheel, but I'm not into reaching down and flipping over the pedal with my hand whilst pedaling and trying to stay upright - not much fun.

I bought these on ebay because I a total ***** when it comes to vintage style adidas. So I definitely flipped when I saw these. They are a remake of their OLD cycling shoes. The bad thing is that when I got them I realized that they are terrible for cycling. The sole is smooth so I can't flip my pedal. So they are a casual shoe now. I ride in Puma H-street and Adidas Rio mostly now. This is still a killer shoe however...

The H street puma really is great. Maybe not so much for you guys in the north for winter but it is great here. It's ridiculously light. Almost like a slipper. And air flows right in for cooling. The bottoms are amazing at gripping the pedal for a flip. Plus they come in a million colors.
