"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - 1000w for 15 minutes and 575w FTP??? Really?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Saw this on page 53 of "Cutting-Edge Cycling" by Allen and Cheung:

The time scale in the bottom does indeed go out to ~5 hours, not 5 minutes. I added the blue and orange lines for reference, blue being the 1000w line, and orange being the 1 hour power.

Opinions as to if this is possible? Hunter allen has piles of real data to use, so I'd see no reason for him to fabricate a data set to illustrate a point in his book. Pretty darn impressive if its legit (but my guess is the timescale is accidentally the wrong one)!

Didn't know there were tandem riders with powertap... :)

Apart from the other stuff, they did 500W for apparently nearly 2 hours. Top level time trialists (Cancellara etc) may have an FTP of ~500W. This is incompatible with being able to hold 2000W (LOL - 1920W for 47 seconds!)

Well, the graph doesn't say anything about w/kg or w/CdA. If this had any chance of being legit I'd assume its the profile for a 200+ lb indoor track sprinter kinda guy - which I know absolutely nothing about. I dont know what kind of power a muscle builder looking cyclist can do.

Bored, I like the tandem theory :D

Here are some figures from the world cup points race (from SRM http://www.srm.de/es/srm-in-action/competition-with-srm/bahn/334-bahn)

1/2 second: 2,096 watts
1 second: 1,638 watts
5 seconds: 1,296 watts
20 seconds: 1,119 watts
1 minute: 677 watts
4 minutes: 558 watts
20 minutes: 443 watts

Even if that dude is like 250lb, I find that highly improbable. 1500w 2min power?

Not to mention, that doesn't look like much of a sprinter profile to me. My Profile is much steeper drop after the sprint than that, and I have strong 1min/5min numbers.

This thread is definitely better the second time

Yep - and the dude averaged about 130 cadence for the entire race - very cool.

It is probably just an editing mistake with the x-axis scale. They are trying to highlight the shape of the curve, not the numbers.

One of the HTC leadout guys was doing about 1000W for one minute during the sprint leadout to setup Cav.

I emailed Hunter Allen about the mistake. I agree the scale is just wrong on the X axis.

tallmantim, the link says 117rpm avg cadence....still pretty cool. I went out and did cadence drills after seeing the link. Got me motivated yesterday. :)

Jancouver, wow. Really? That is pretty impressive and I did kinda wonder how hard those leadout guys were pushing. They certainly are wearing the "mask of pain" as Liggett might say. Was there an SRM data file posted?
