Thanks for the warm welcome guys I've been meaning to join a forum for some time. Yeah Whittier is a pretty chill area, I ride the riverbeds a lot of the time. I enjoy heading to the ocean but when I'm not there I'm either up Turnbull canyon or riding around the tri-city area. Haha yes rodies isn't what I meant I don't think I need to elaborate on a typo. How about you guys? Hit up the rivers often?

Turnbull on a road bike or mountain biking? I haven't braved that road yet - the Hacienda side is a little scrawny in terms of available road width and the drivers..... eh. Depending on what mood I'm in and how much time I have, i'll go down SGRT to Seal Beach and back, or continue to SART and come back that way for a long flat weekend ride. My new favorite mid week training ride is this one:

I love both myself; but think the road bike route is a lot more fun.
For real climbing, take the SGRT all the way north and head up 39 to GMR, Crystal Lake, Mt. Baldy and all sorts of places.

Yeah the green way is pretty bad, I just use it as a means to get to SGRT. At least once every two weeks I'll take SGRT to the Rio trail to seal beach then head south to the SGRT and from there I head north back to Whittier. Well I ride the road only. I don't have a mountain bike but I'd love to have one. I've been ridding for about four years now all road. Turnbull is good fun those descents are great. I agree the road gets pretty narrow but traffic is pretty light most of the time.
I like that idea of heading all the way north on SGRT I'll have to keep that in mind.

Hey Rick thanks for the invite will you be with a group? that sounds like a great ride and I haven't been up Turnbull in a while I'd love to join but I'll be working all day that day. I work in a super market. For the next three weeks I'll be putting In forty hours cuz my manager is on vacation so I'll be doing the ordering and what not. I see your a produce manager you know how it goes. Sometime you'll have to show me the ins and outs of Turnbull I only know the main course.

So what kinda bikes do you guys ride?
I sold off most of my other bikes (mostly refurbished vintage) to support my newer bike habit. I got a 2004 Quintana Roo tequillo that I've hooked up with mostly SRAM red drivetrain working on getting rid of the bull horns though.

On the Hacienda Heights (HH) side of the hill, at the intersection of E. Los Altos Drive and Billiary Way, I have noticed a middle aged Asian male using a telephoto lens to watch the hillside above. Beware that he is watching for road cyclists descending towards the firestation.
When he spots a lone single rider, he will occasionally jump in his vehicle (a dark blue GMC panel van when I observed him) and intercept the rider at the stop sign that T-intersects with Los Lomitas Drive. This stop sign is just after the firestation and the blind curve. Twice he has trapped me by doing a slow 3-point U-turn, completely blocking the road. You have only seconds to choose the inner or outer line to avoid him. The descending rider does not have to stop and can easily hit 30+ mph. It's surprising that no rider has gone down, either avoiding him and crashing, going off the road, or directly impacting the car. Only the Highway Patrol will keep track of such info. Industry Hills Sheriff will not discuss the history of cyclist accidents in this area.
I have reported this to the Industry Hills Sheriff at 1-626-330-3322. They took my call and several email messages were exchanged. Of course, I was not hurt but I was unneccesarily put in harms way. They couldn't do much especially since I was the first and only rider to report this.
If you happen to see this guy, either at the stop sign with sketchy U-turn or using his telephoto to watch the hill, report it to the number above.
I have some idea who the guy is: its someone who might be doing RE business on Billiary Way and has huge amounts of time on his hands. He was dressed in dark slacks and red polo shirt - as if he was golfing. I have seen him in action in spring of 2010 and again in spring 2011.
Most of the roadies that ride through here are too busy to notice anything funny. I put the details of his 'Deliverance for Roadies' plot together only when I broke my usual habit and ascended Turnbull from the HH side, passing by Billiary Way and passed by him as he scoped the hilll above with the camera.

Well, that's *@&# weird. Thanks for the tip. There are so many cyclists in that general area I find it hard to believe nobody else has had run ins with that jerk.

BTW, the map you linked to does not name Billiary Way. Buts its the unamed cul-de-sac next to Pintura. There are million dollar 7bed/5bath mansions there sitting empty.

Well, thats part of the problem... it was around 1 pm. I never ride early in this area. I come to Whittier from N. Orange County so it takes about an hour.
Despite my lazy habits, I still see other riders this late in the day. I have given a few the heads-up about the stalker.
Bottom line is: when you pass the firestation and the blind curve, focus on the stop sign and any vehicles that might approach it from E. Los Altos (barely visible through the brush). If its all clear, go ahead and bomb the hill towards Vallecito. However if any vehicle shows up at the stop sign, odds are its our man and he has timed his arrival to make trouble. There are no co-incidents in this situation, so cover your brakes or begin to slow until you feel its safe to open up the speed.

Okay, no problem. Actually I'm a product (not produce) manager at Hollywood Racks (we make bike racks for cars). So I have to go to Interbike and visit our distributors and visit the factory in Taiwan, etc.
Let me know when you have a free weekend day off, or we could even do an evening ride on Mon./Wed. since I do the Rebel evening rides (in Irvine) on Tues. and Thur. evenings. Friday is a rest day (well, I commute to work) since we usually hit the mountains (Glendora Mtn. Road, or Angeles Crest, or Hwy 39, or Onyx Summit or something like that) on Sat. and sometimes Sun. too.
Bike wise I usually ride my Titanium GT Edge, which is SRAM Force equipped. For silly-steep stuff I have an 11-32 cassette fitted which required a SRAM XX mountain bike rear derailluer. I also have an 853 (steel) GT Edge w/Shimano 105/Ultegra mix and a GT Zaskar Mountain bike which is a SRAM/Shimano mix component wise (yeah, I used to work for GT).
For riding to the beach on the Coyote Creek and SGRT trails I ride fixed gear. For commuting to work I have a DaHon Curve folding bike since I have to fold it to ride the Metro from Norwalk into Los Angeles.

Billary Way is that cul-de-sac of (nearly) new McMansions. I ride by there all the time, and have never seen him. Visibility isn't too good on that stretch of Turnbull if you're descending, (especially where you make a left to continue on Turnbull), so caution is always warranted.

Cool thanks Rick Wow what a ride I'm looking forward to joining you sometime. I only get to ride courses of that caliber when I'm alone it would be great to join a group. The only group riding I've done is with a couple of my buds that I have introduced to cycling. They are some what novice but they get better with ever ride. And one of my friends In particular is really taking to the road, I'm taking him on his second century on tuesday. I'm glad I could share the joy of cycling with them though. I frequent that same Starbucks on philidelphia post ride, Mimo's cafe is pretty nice too for a place to sit outdoors. Hmm maybe this week I can join in on an evening ride.

Sorry to glom on to your thread, Aluminum_Herb, but I'm in La Habra. I sold off my road bikes a year or so ago and got back into BMX, but I just picked up another road bike the other night. Nothing special - and it needs a little work - just something so that I can comb the Heights again. So once my bike's all ready I'll be down for some rides through the Heights. I normally ride (well, rode and will ride again) Santa Gertrudes to West Road to Hacienda to East Road to Fullerton to Whittier and back.

Awesome to have another WHittier rider!! I'm currently living in Norwalk but I spend most of my riding time in whittier. I love doing West/East rd, hacienda, have done turnbull once and I also like riding the riverbed up to the San gabriel mountains. I'm free to ride most any day of the week since I'm not working right now. As long as it's earlier in the day so i can be back before the wife comes home! haha...This week (7/30-8/3) is perfect for me except thursday until probably noon. If you're free any time then, Let me know. Also, i'll shoot you a PM with my email so we can maybe plan some rides!!
And rick, next time you plan a nice ride in the whittier area, Let me know and I'm up for it. I've been wanting to practice my hills more and more. I did turnbull the other day and loved it even though it killed me!!

I'm still in "fix up the bike" mode; I need a serious truing/tensioning on both my wheels. So I'm out, but keep us posted in the future. Once my bike's done I'd be happy to suck someone's wheel. :D
