So I'm flying down this hill to get a run at a steep embankment across a creek. When I get to the embankment I mash the pedals, get about three rounds and Kapow! I thought I'd broken my chain, (I wish), but as it turns out I trashed the internals of my rear hub. There's 3 pawls with a single wire spring around them which drive the rear wheel. Also the notched ring which the pawls drive is cracked in four places. My question is, can these internal pieces be replaced or am I in need of a new rear hub? I've never seen these pieces in any catalogs etc. Thanks
Rear hub according to Giants specs is: Hubs: Alloy SL, sealed bearing, QR, cassette

You don't need an entire hub. Just get the hub body (The part that holds the cassette.) There's a 10mm Allen bolt inside the body --once you have removed the axel-- it comes right off and is replaceable. Any LBS should have them or can get them. You just need to tell them what speed it was: 7,8 or9. Actually, Shimano 8/9 is the same.

Does the hub body come with the outer toothed ring which the pawls drive?

Thanks but it didn't. I've had them apart before. What I'm wanting to know is if the inner toothed ring which the pawls drive against can be replaced. Or if it comes with a free-hub assembly. It stays inside the hub shell when the free-hub is removed. Thanks.

If those are stripped, it's time for a new hub, sorry dude!

I'm not sure I understand what you are saying. When the Free Hub is removed, there is a gear cast into the hub it self. The free hub bolts to this to drive the wheel. The pawls you are speaking of, I think, are inside the free hub which can be replaced.

Right, the gear that's in the hub is cracked in 4 places. I assume it's pressed in. I just realized that it's still in warranty so I'm taking it to a bike shop to see what they will do. I'm just afraid I'm down for a while.:(

The teeth that the pawls grab are almost always part of the freewheel housing. If the teeth are trashed, then you do need a new freewheel. Congrats - that doesn't happen often. If anything, the pawls usually give first.

You could consider sending the freewheel to the manufacturer and asking if they would replace it.

Here's some pics if anyone's interested.
There is actually only two pawls there. They're just broken.
Note the four cracks in the internal gear in the hub.
And what does all this mean? Legs of STEEL!:D

Ya, no kidding. I want to know too. That one goes on the "S" list.

This is all the specs say: Hubs: Alloy SL, sealed bearing, QR, cassette. The bike was spec'd pretty well. I don't know why they'd put a crappy hub on it. It's on a Mavic Crossroc (sp?) USB wheelset.

I looked at the Mavic tech book, but it doesn't give a detailed breakdown of that hub.
My catalogs say the Crossroc is for tubeless tires. How do you like them?

I had some problems with the Hutchinson Pythons cutting on sharp rocks, but I now have Kenda Karismma tubeless tires on, and they are great. No problems whatsoever so far. I do think that tubeless tires get better traction when cornering because they flex more without the tube. I also haven't notice them losing any more air than tubed tires.
Thanks for checking on that hub for me. I'll let you know how it turns out. Meanwhile, I'm reviving my old Mongoose. Gotta ride! :D
