Fifty Plus (50+) - I am going to complain about a great free bike forum

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
This summer to remember coke add is killing me. Sometimes it starts coming on and I can click close until my mouse dies and it will not close and will open for several times as I go from page to page.
To keep this bike related do you drink coke while riding. I saw where some liked the cokes from Mexico because the use sugar instead of corn syrup.

Drinking a cola after 40-60 miles will give you energy that you can feel for rest of the ride.

I'm not getting that one. A week or so ago it was a Nemours ad that was driving me nuts. Generally I don't mind the ads. Sometimes, they're a bit out of control.

I'll have to give soda for energy a try when I'm doing longer rides. But before longer rides comes a better bike ... before a better bike comes the money ... which is arduous and I'm impatient! lol

Get the cola from a can...fountain drinks are not very consistent with the sugar or caffeine.

Maybe they still use real cocaine.

Or you could get the Titanium membership, no ads to worry about and it supports the site. It isn't free but I like helping the site stay healthy. JMHO.

The ones that I hate are the low T ads. They tease you with a photo that I'd like to see more of but, when you click on it, the photo goes away. Isn't that false advertising?
Try a Cuba Libre with Mexican Coke, delish!

Coke makes a good recovery drink because of its high sugar content, almost as good as chocolate milk. And I always go for the ice-cold cokes during hot centuries and doubles. Goes down way easier than the awful sports drinks you've been sucking out of the bottle all day. Lots of sugar and a bit of caffeine to keep you going...
When I rode Paris-Brest-Paris last year, the last controle was at Dreux. I bought a can of Coke and a beer and mixed them together in my water bottle. Sucked on that mixture all the way to the line in Paris (well, Guyancourt anyway). The perfect drink after 1,000 km.
My first cycling coach back in the 70's, an ex-professional 6-day racer, told us that the Dutch amateurs would mix up Coke and Heineken in a small flask and down it for the final 10 km of a race leading up to the sprint. I never tried that, though. And it's not doping. When you're at the dope control, they usually have a cooler full of drinks to aid you in providing a sample. There's always Cokes and beer in there!

The car insurance ads I get are awful. I can't wait until the political ads click in. I may just get the paid membership to dodge that stuff.

WUT?!?
I've never heard of that - I'd have though that beer would be the WORST thing you could drink during or after a ride?
I'm planning to do PBP in 2015, so I need details! ;)

What is this ad thing of which you speak? Bikeforums has ads..? I've never seen one ... courtesy of Adblock.

If you want to put more chemicals in your body . . .
Hey, it's your chocie.
I don't drink that stuff . . . if it's not fermented grapes, why bother?
In vino veritas
Unless I'm going over 70 miles, I rarely need an energy drink. Just water, thanks. After that, I'll go with whatever the convenience store has.

I use Adblock, but not on this forum. I like seeing most of the ads. I prefer getting advertsing that focuses on things I might be interested in, rather than getting the general schlock that come from other places. There are times, however, when the ads here get to be problems. The Nemours ad a few weeks ago drove me nuts.

Oh, wait a minute, there they are. There must be an ad filter between my eyes and brain.

It seems these ads are responsible for reducing the size of my pictures. In preview my photos look the size I want them to be but when they appear on the forum everything conforms to the reduced width because of the adjacent ad. Seems hardly worth going to the trouble of uploading photos when they are going to appear as big as business cards.

I have never gotten my pictures as large as some I have seen here. I guess I just don't know hot to get them in the larger size.
I am doing the happy dance. Adblock seems to have taken care of the problem.
Thanks for the great advise.

I use adblock as well. I would continue receiving the ads and even by golly looking at them, but the ones that generate a popup if you accidentally drag your cursor across them pushed me to adblock. I don't mind ads, but sometimes they simply go too far.

Those Coke ads are Terrible. Not as bad as the ad for that Endurance show, that one had audio!!!
I like Cokes. Mexican Coke in glass bottle = tasty!
I'd have to imagine Coke is paying tour riders to drink them but I'd also imagine most would drink Cokes without getting paid for it.
To post big pics, upload them to flickr.com (or similar service) then, from flickr pic page:
Click on Share button
Grab the HTML/BBCode
select size you want (1024 x whatever is usually adequate)
click on BBCode radio button
copy BBCode
paste into reply text area.

I have no problem with general internet advertising but brush your mouse cursor over some of the ads on this forum and your computer is taken over. Mods take note I would never support any business that uses this type of advertising. ie. car dealership ad

Why would you mix two good drinks to produce a disgusting drink? Paris-Brest-Paris must be tough enough without the swamp water in your waterbottle.
In Spain, they drink beer mixed with lemon soda. Gross.

Actually, I disagree.
In the UK, a "shandy" is a very common drink. Half beer, half Sprite (or similar). You'll be surprised at how good it tastes, and how refreshing it is.
Popular with women who don't like beer's heaviness, and with business people who feel they'd like to to drink 'something' at business lunches, but want something light and which won't lull them to sleep in the afternoon.
Try it!

I run ad blocker, but I was getting those pop-up ads, too. They were getting past ad blocker because they were java script. Accidentally brush your mouse past the ad and it would take over your whole screen! They've stopped now, at least for me.

I kind of favor Dr. Pepper myself, but not on rides. Gu, among others, make energy gels with caffeine. I do need some water to get one of those down, though. It's a lot faster to eat a Gu with a little water than to chug down a 20 oz soda, but if it's post ride, I suppose it doesn't matter. Pre ride, I can do without the carbonation.

Bike Forums does not have popup ads. If you can, please send a screen shot to Tom Stormcrowe [Tom(at)bikeforums(dot)net].
A lot of "free" service IPs will rewrite web pages (http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/04/06/courtyard-marriott-wifi/) to insert popup ads.

Yes, I did see that and it was a shock to me, I could hardly believe what I was seeing.
If one is trying to quench their thirst Coke Cola is not a good choice. In fact drinking a Coke in hot weather when I am thirsty will make me even more thirsty. I am convinced that nothing satisfies thirst better than plan old water. I enjoy a nice cool Coke but not when I am riding.

It’s slow but it sure is a comfortable ride. No, the seat is not too low, I get full leg extension.
This picture is about 2 months old and I have upgraded to some high quality pedals since this picture was taken. Why is it that most all bikes come with crappy pedals or no pedals at all?

Not sure why you're shocked.
Randonneurs ride long, hard distances all the time (the short rides are 130+ miles, the long rides are 750+ miles) and with many of them, Coke is the first thing they reach for when they get to a control point.
The Race Across America (RAAM) is one of the hardest endurance events in the world. Watch what the riders reach for when they take a brief rest - Coke is usually high on the list.
I seconded my brother on an Iron Man some time ago. Each of the refreshment tables had water, Gatorade, and Coke. One of the favorite drinks among the participants, particularly in the final miles of the marathon? Coke - sometimes mixed 50/50 with water.
Personally, when I've just finished a 2-hour 20-mph ride in the current 90+ degree weatherand I'm ready to collapse and die the moment I get off the bike -- I usually have water with Nuun, or maybe a Gatorade. But when I see my cycling buddies pull a Coke out of the cooler, I always feel I'm taking in a better drink than they are ... but damn, my mouth is watering at the site of their Cokes.
And when I stupidly dehydrated and under-nourished myself on a 300 km (187 mile) ride a while ago - when I finally hit a control point and realized the mistake I was making - my hand reached for a Coke without any conscious input from my (fried) brain. Not what I usually drink, but my system knew what it needed.
So while I'd agree that slugging Cokes down is a bad idea normally, I'd suggest that it has some merit as a sports drink...
