North Carolina is one of only FIVE states to limit alcohol by volume (ABV) for beer to under 6%.
Following North Carolina's repeal of Prohibition in 1935, powerful mill owners within the state pressured state legislators to impose an alcohol by volume (ABV) cap on beer. Why? Mill owners were concerned that workers would fail to report to work on Mondays.
Laws often have crazy origins, but this law isn't about elephants plowing cotton fields or playing the piccolo late at night. Though the origin of this law is almost comic, the effects are far from funny. This artificial and antiquated definition of beer limits consumer choice; stifles the state's beer, retail and restaurant businesses; and limits state tax revenue as thousands of North Carolinians purchase their specialty beer in neighboring states.
And now, with Georgia raising their limit from 6% to a more reasonable 14%, North Carolina is one of five states with a strict ABV restriction. The other four? South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi and Arkansas.
It's time to Pop the Cap. We'll even come to work on Monday.
Help Pop the Cap abolish the artificial definition of beer in North Carolina.
