Cyclocross - REI bike purchase and shipping to Canada

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I see the 2012 Raleigh Rx 1.0 are being sold from REI outlet for $1200 which is about $500 less than here in Canada. Shipping is 10% which is far less than my cost to take a ferry and pick it up. Has anyone bought a bike this was and what did you get charged for duty? LBS will not match this because their cost is $1300.

I would like to proceed but not if the deal does not make sense. 2013's are coming out so I am guessing the same bikes will be reduced to $1500.

Think there is an $800 allowance to across the border ,
lots of BC residents shop in Oregon,
as there is a repeated attempt to get sales taxes on the ballot, here,
but they never pass.

If you do a Cyclo-cross race and leave it muddy maybe as a used bike
it will get a customs pass thru..

but that is go south and buy, not shipping, and stay there..

Here's the skinny. If I stay at home, I will pay 10% for shopping, 13% for duty, and 12% for taxes. Plus no service deal. To save $, I like the idea of getting it in Oregon. Good reason to visit one of my favorite places, stay for 2 days, and bring it home with some exemption. Still no service deal.

Dodging duty and taxes is a bit sketchy for me especially when traveling with family.

Rideonagain on Broadway and Vine in Vancouver, BC is selling brand new Raleigh RX 1.0 for $1099 cad. They only have 3 sizes left. If you need larger than 55cm, then the Masi CXR at $1199 is a great deal. There, you can justify the BC Ferry's trip to Van and save.
