There's a petition we need to get folks to sign, to convince Nassau County to add either ridable shoulders or a bike lane to West Shore Rd., from Oyster Bay to Bayville. They are currently planning a $30 million renovation and have indicated there will not be a bike lane. Time to change their minds.

Badly needed, this is a heavily used and dangerous road for cyclists.

I've never understood why the people of Bayville have constantly battled against any improvements that might actually bring some business to all those struggling restaurants along the water. I ride West Shore Road to Bayville regularly, but will not bring my wife along, as the ride is way too dangerous for a casual cyclist like her. If we could ride together, we would surely stop for dinner at The Breakers, the Tiki Bar, or even the pizzeria at least once or twice a week.

I have signed the petition, but I wish I could sign it several more times.

Unfortunately, it may be a done deal for no shoulder or lane as they opened bids in early July. The website of whatever her name is, the local county legislator, is harping about it's moving ahead and seemingly indicates there willnot be a lane/shoulder due to "community opposition".

If this road get's re-built with no shoulder it's a friggin travesty. I recall how upset you were Tom, about Jackson Ave. in Syosset not having a lane. At least there are some alternatives to Jackson, but there's no alternative to Shore Rd.

I also suspect that the Center Island folks would not be too happy with a lane that would make it easier to get up that way.

Sigh....

I suppose that, while the rest of us do not have much choice when it comes to changes that might rescue us from our dire economic situations, the folks of Center Island, Bayville, and the rest of those Gold Coast communities don't have to be concerned about a bunch of bicyclists riding into town to patronize their delicatessens.

I was contacted, years ago, by a newly-hired Town of Oyster Bay planner who was determined to build a bike path along West Shore Road. By this guy's enthusiasm, you could almost guarantee that it was going to get done. Within a few weeks, the guy was nowhere to be found.

I guess, for now, the Mill Hill Road detour to Bayville will have to continue serving as a "safer" route for cyclists.
