Hi SoCal forumites,

Just an FYI to let you know that Lou Ann and I will be doing a GMR / GRR (that's Glendora Mountain Road to Glendora Ridge Road) ride to Mount Baldy Village (and back) this Saturday starting from Boulder Springs Road in Glendora (the only place on GMR where there's a traffic light) at 7:00AM.

We'll be staying with some GMR virgins at 7:00AM, so those of you who climb well are welcome to start at 8:00AM (with JimmyNH and Rodney) or whenever you want, of course.

263605

Lou Ann and I also have a plan to add the Ski-Lift Climb :( (2,000 feet of climbing in 4.6 miles) above Mt. Baldy Village, which is Brutal (beyond category for the Pros) so we will not be taking the virgins up there! Or, well . . . unless one of the virgins surprises us and goes zipping up the mountain, in which case . . . maybe.

So, all fortumites are invited to join us and esp. any that are GMR virgins and have been looking for a good oportunity to lose their GMR virginity:).

We will have a stop at the Shed (9 mi. up approx.) and at Mt. Baldy Lodge. Here is the post on the OC Rebel site for further details: http://www.ocrebels.com/special.htm

Any questions?

Rick / OCRR

Hmmmm, it looks like Rick volunteered me as a co-organizer. OK, let's take this one by one:
- First of all, I don't know about the GMR virgins but you, bro, must get laid this Friday night. Then you'll be a lot more agreeable to a later start time. ;) :p
- I don't like this start location, so I'll start from Glendora High School at 8:00 AM.
- I'm not going to babysit anybody, come prepared and be self-sufficient. We'll be hauling arse! ;) ("hauling arse" means moving at my speed or faster, just like the par on Willie Nelson's golf course is whatever he shoots that day)
- As usual, I only invite a very select group of riders. Only the wise, those who are not afraid of Mr. Heat and those who got laid on Friday night can join me. :D

I cannot ride with you guys for 2 of the 3 reasons Jimmy posted. I won't say what two!
Seriously, I'll see if I can make it.

I won't be making the ride due to schedule issues. But at the risk of sharing TMI, I'm usually really sluggish on the bike if I get laid the night before. Probably due to lack of sleep and dehydration.

Genaro, Please keep in mind that Jimmy's reasons are only applicable to the 8:00AM start from the High School and do not apply to riders who start from Boulder Springs location.

Just sayin' . . .

My first attempt last year, halfway between the shack and the village. Turned around due to time constraints.
This past July 4th, to the village. Nixed the ski lifts due to heavy holiday motorized traffic. GRR/GMR pretty much deserted on my way down.
Getting a BG Fit tomorrow.
Was thinking of losing my virginity on the ski lifts this weekend, as the little lady is going back to visit her parents in WI.

If I show, don't wait for me. Slow climber. I'll be self-sufficient.

What kind of pace are we talking about for the poky people anyway? I've only been to the shack twice and nixed the trip to the village for time constraints one fateful evening in June.

We are climbing to Crystal lake the same day!! Watch you for the motorcycle nuts.

Do you have a garmin or strava or whatever trip you did to Crystal lake? I was looking for things to do at the north end of SGRT and it looks like Crystal Lake is a direct shot north but I'm not entirely positive where / how far that ride takes you.

Just follow hwy 39 up on strava, mapmyride or map site. From the point where the trail dumps you on to hwy 39, it is about 21 miles to the Crystal Lake turn off.

I say once you get to the west fork area, it gets a bit steeper than GMR.

few miles before CL.

Hey Volosong, it was nice meeting you on the 4-th of July. Screw the ski-lifts, that road should be closed to bicycles. :notamused: ;) Join us for an easy ride to the village and for pizza and beer after the ride - Round Table on Foothill Blvd and Grand Ave in Glendora.

I can talk just for myself here. I usually make the first KOM (from the gate to the shack) in about 50 minutes, then another 55-60 minutes to the Cow Saddle (just before that steep downhill to the village). I think my buddy Rodney is about the same, don't know who else will pitch up. Rick is faster than me, but he's got a good heart and usually rides slower to encourage and help the slower riders. Of course, if you start with us at 8:00, Rick will be drinking beer at the village by the time we get there. :D If you've got time constraints again, you can go back through Claremont - it's about 30 minutes faster than going back through GRR/GMR.

I did it once in 1:02 and again later in 100 degree heat in 1:12 or so, so what I'm hearing is I better go with the head-start crowd. :)

I'll work on the other requirements Friday evening. :roflmao2:

The pace for these new GMR virgins is not going to be fast; I'm guessing 4 - 5 mph for most of the climbing. Time to the Shack will probably be 1:30 - 1:45 and time to the Village 3:00 - 3:30. There are lots of variables though.

Some virgins may decide to turn around at the Shack, others may keep pushing on . . . have to wait and see.

TrojanHorse, You are welcome to join us at the 7:00AM start (as is volosong) and Beanz, though Beanz is fast enough to wait for the 8:00AM start with JimmyNH and Rodney. Linda and Lou Ann will both be there, starting at 7:00AM, but I'm not sure if they will stay with the virgins or hammer up the climb (as they are both very capable).

Also, volosong, my time from Mt. Baldy Village is about an hour to the summit of the ski lift climb, or a bit under on a good day, just FYI.

Should be fun in either case!

Okay, that's great TrojanHorse, See you at Boulder Springs! Try to get there before 7:00AM since that's actually the "click-in" / depart time.

Hey Jimmy-

After the ride up GMR Saturday, I'd expect nothing less than you getting laid again post ride, then showing up for the group ride on Sunday with fresh legs! I'm dying to do a GMR ride; never been up there. Working Saturdays is for the birds! Have a safe ride everyone!

Hey Brian, can you call in sick? ;)
Pick up a Sunday that works for you and we can do a GMR Sunday ride. I know quite a few people who prefer Sundays for this ride.

Thanks for the times. I'm a somewhat of a slow climber. Just checked my times on Strava and my best time for the "gate to the shack" is 1:07, and for the "GMR stop sign to Baldy Village" is 3:27, but that includes about a half hour/45 minutes visiting at the shack.

I have to take the little lady to the airport tonight for a 1:00 a.m. flight. Coming from Palmdale and with little sleep, it will be an accomplishment for me to get there by 7:00. I'll give it a good try.

I don't think I saw any other BF people besides Rick, not that I'd recognize any of you.

Another gorgeous day in southern California!

The alarm went off at 4:15, after getting to bed at 1:00. You can guess that I just rolled over and shucked it. Did wake up with the lawn mowers and finally got on the bike at GMR and Boulder Springs Road at 9:00 sharp after having to turn around because I forgot my water bottles. Didn't see anybody I recognized. Passed several people on the way up, and was passed by a couple. Nobody at the shack, so I didn't stop and continued on to the Village. Didn't see anybody I recognized there either and headed back. I chickened out on the ski lifts. I'm going to save that until November or December when it cools off and also when I can bring the triple. Strava upload to come later today.

Hey Cbad, take the law in your own hands and post a GMR ride whenever is good for you. There is no really much of a responsibilty here. And if you need to chicken out of your own ride - just PM me and I'll tell you how. ;) :D

Great ride today guys. I started all by myself from the high school (it seems nobody else got laid last night :p). Made the first KOM in 51:55, so that's the "par" for today. :D After that I rode with a friend of mine, so it was more like an interval training for me from the shack to the villeage. Saw quite a few people at the lodge. It was scary to see my buddy Frank who went up to Mt Baldy on a single speed (48:16 if I'm not mistaken). That must be illegal! ;) Pizza and Mr. Sam Adams made a perfect finish for the day. :thumb:
By the way - I know why Mr. Beanz wasn't here today. I saw the guy on TV in London, opening the Olympics. :D

False.

My alarm is set, it's 11:30 pm and my wife knew I had to get up early. Apparently that is the key. :roflmao2: If she has to get up early the whole house goes into lockdown. :notamused:

Is Rick still up there doing ski lift intervals?

False. Is Rick still up there doing ski lift intervals?

No, Rick is home now, just waking up from a nap that started a few minutes after my shower. I started off strong on the Ski Lift climb but then faded and finished 4th of our group behind Chris, Brian and Stefan. Lots of hikers up there today!

Great ride and good to meet TrojanHorse and Mark (whom we met at The Shack and talked him into trying his first ride to The Village). Both Mark and Sean did very well.

Beautiful day on the mountain; here's my Strava: http://app.strava.com/rides/15196869

How far did Mark go to the lifts? Did he make it all the way?

Rick@OCRR
07-29-12, 06:54 PM
Not sure how far he went. I passed him early on, later heard from Stefan that he'd turned back, so no way to know and he's not a member of bikeforums.net, so it may be one of those unsolved mysteries!

264311Here is a photo of Mark leading Trojan Horse at Cow Saddle (GRR). Does anyone recognize this rider? If so, please advise.

264304Trojan Horse, probably on GRR.

264305TrojanHorse at Mount Baldy Village.

Here are a couple of shots of Trojan Horse. The first climbing GRR and the 2nd at Mt. Baldy Village. Couldn't talk him into riding to the Ski Lifts with us.

The is Frank who rode to the Ski Lift Summit on a single speed (FW) 48 x 16, if I remembered his gear ratio right. He suffered big time, but he made it.
