hey all my fork and headset were stolen the other day

does anyone have any security advice?
i have heard of putting crazy glue and or hot glue gun glue into the hex sockets has anyone tried this method?

also does anyone have their bike insured?

hot glue works well, it'd probably be enough to make any aspiring thief go "**** it" and move on.

Dunno. An "aspiring thief" who's down for nicking your headset and fork is clearly more determined than most.

As for efficacy, the only proof is if it gets stolen. Most folks don't have problems with people taking their headset and fork so they're going to have even less advice about useful deterrents. My personal advice would be to fill all the allen holes up with something like epoxy. It'll suck to get out but it should make it harder to steal on the street.

How was your headset stolen? That must be some theif to carry around a headset cup remover... Thats insane.

As for insurance, my bikes are all insured under my homeowners policy. And it didn't require riders or anything, just under my general homeowners insurance with a $500 deductible. If you rent, renters insurance is very inexpensive...but you may need a rider for expensive bicycles on renters insurance. I'd look into it...

Wax (or glue) in the allen head of a quill stem? That WOULD suck to get it out.

I'd chalk this all up to a very determined thief- probably nothing would have stopped him- particularly if he took the entire headset. The guy obviously knew something about bikes- which makes it all the worse.

You could get a ghetto fixie where all the parts are seized together... I to free a fork from one of those with a hack saw!

I've put silicon into the hex hole, stripped the logos off the components, wrapped bits with duct tape and still had everything snarfed. As per filtersweep, if they want your stuff bad enough it's theirs, unless you tie a pitbull to the bike (in which case they'd probably just take the dog too).

i say replace the parts and set up a sting operation. put the bike in the same spot at the same time of day and stake it out with a taser close by. score a few points for all of us.

Man, the way things go in courts now, you'll be lucky if the bike thieves don't start a class action suit against you on the grounds of 'restraint of trade' based on your post.

Bicycle or car parts they can steal. That is only money.
Some 'parts' I would object to somebody stealing.
Like a kidney or something.

Here's my method .... find a ball bearing that fits in the allen head. I then use some exterior wood glue to hold it in place. It a real pain to get out and the bearing won't let the allen key into the allen head.

wax does nothing... press an allen wrench on there and it just pushes the wax down...
hot glue can be pulled out with a knife or a pen or anything small and pointy...
the bearing thing sounds god but also sounds like a huge pain in the ass if you ever want want to get it out...

you can get allen bolts that have a little pin in the middle of the head, and you need a wrench that's drilled to get around that pin... i think that would be your best option...

i put out cigarettes in the bolt at the top of my stems all the time... it makes your hands smell real bad when you take the bolt out... take that theives!
