So, it's true. There have been...performance issues. Everything is going okay, then a slip and, well, momentum is lost. Quite embarrassing. :- (

The problem might be that the equipment's old, or maybe it's just that expectations are too high, the reputation too much to live up to.

(Some might even say that it was not that great back in the day, but no one complained in the 60s!)

No one would deny that it looks great, gleaming and ready for hard use. I know, the truth is that newer and less fine-looking ones may actually work better, mechanically at least. But for most of us friction is all we'll ever need.

So I'm trying again this weekend, this time with an adjustment to the angle, and possibly some more or different lube. I admit, my technique could use some more finesse, too.

But if that doesn't work I will reluctantly have to give up and try something else. Hope it doesn't come to that.

The first step has been taken.

You've admitted to a problem, er issue. :)

Now go fix it, pronto.

The video is not mine, but one I gathered from youtube. It was put up there as a teaser by a producer well known for presenting hot, well lubed derailleur-on-chain action.

I have a few older derailers but I use a newer 105 5600 rd because it wraps the chain better, moves with ease, and makes less noise. I'm not really a purist but I still have friction shifters.
