General Cycling Discussion - Bibs

I may have finally found what I need for cool weather riding. Bibs. I purchased a pair of Pearl Izumi bib tights, and I think they may just be what I need. They are finally tight enough. Regular tights are never tight enough. I always have to wear some kind of undergarment under them (the boys can't stand the freedom), but the bibs seem to keep everything tight. (Actually I worry they may be a little too tight--the boys seem to be split down the middle--TMI, I realize!) Anyway, I'm liking these. Others of you found the bibs to provide a more comfortable ride? I have gotten so frustrated and cold as regular tights slip down the backside. And as I said before, they just didn't provide any support. I feel like a kid with a new toy. should have thought of this before.

I have two pairs of Bibs and IMO they are 1000000000000000000000000x better than regular shorts.

Bibs are better than penicillin. Solved my saddle sore problems and certainly provide support. My remaining shorts will be phased out as I buy more bibs.

While we're on the subject, anyone know of any good sales on bib shorts right now?

I've been wearing Bib shorts and tights for over 20 years. I still have a few old Kucharik regular shorts with natural chamois that I love, but new technology bibs with proper sized inserts are by far the best from a health and comfort standpoint. Most of the major manufacturers make Bibs now. Prices from 40 to well into the hundreds. I've found that Performance mailorder shorts work as well as any. Usually they have a 2 for under a $100.00 deal that's hard to beat. I've also found more comfort from Bib tights that have stirrups rather than a zipper or just elastic at the ankle. Something else I've begun doing in the past 8 or 10 years is wearing two pairs of light summer bib tights on 20 degree days, rather than a heavier pair of winter tights. I find I'm just as warm with more freedom of movement.

Check performance for sales, their house brands our pretty good. I really like the performance Ultra bibs, but the elites are good too. They often have sales where you can get 2 pair for under $100

Nashbar also has some good sales but I have not tried their house brand.

I currently have Performance Ultra bibs, Bellwether Elite8 bibs, and Bergamo Bibs. I would recommend all 3 as they work great for me. However everyone is different so what works for me may not work for you

Bibs just aren't good for chicks. Man, if I have to stop for a quick pee, I wouldn't be able to get them off fast enough. :( Shorts'll have to do.

Ms. Brown. I have a good news for you. I'm an expert in this field.
First, you pull the shoulder straps off the shoulder, under the jersey, you don't have to take it off. Then pull the side of the bibs, where cut low, place your hands little towards your back, down hard. Material of the bibs stretches enough and strong enough to comes down below your buttocks. Now you squat and do the work. You can do this in one swift movement. When you finish, just by standing up make your bibs pull up over your butt, all you have to do is pull up the straps under the jersey. Wipe or no wipe is your option. By the time this happens, you are covered in sweat anyway. Now you have no excuse left to convert to bibs.

Let's summarize it.
Male: Pull down hard on the front part.
Female: Take straps off, pull down hard on the back.

I can also squat and pull my shorts down just as easy. Probably easier. ;)

No bibs for me, I'm afraid. :)

Bibs are where it's at... I started with some PI Bibs, and they weren;t bad... but the wife got me some Descente Aero Bibs... damn... they feel incredible... They were on sale for abround $90.. I really would like another pair.

The only time I wear shorts now are on sshort rides... usually weekday evening rides in the summer, or on the trainer...

Ladies, you don't have a lot of choice. This is one of rare finding and pretty expensive.

Or how about trying out men's sizes? They stretch a lot. As long as hip size fit, the rest is not as important.

When I was in Italy, the DeRosas gave me a bib... it's made for women.

I haven't worn it. God bless the DeRosas, but they have more confidence in me wearing them then I do! :)

All there is to it is the shoulder straps, Koffee.
They're no bother once you've worn em a few times.

I think girls look good in bibs. ;) (Bibs preventing IT from free fall by suspending from the shoulders.)
If more ladies ask for bibs, they eventually see the market and start making more bibs and hopefully cheaper. From the way I see it, just about all male pro cyclists wearing bibs, I don't see any reason female pro cyclists not wearing them.
