Winter Cycling - DIY shoe covers

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
So after riding in northern wisconsin a few years ago I noticed that the coldest part of my body of my ride is my hands and feet. One night my feet got so cold I had to stop and warm up. Sence then I have used more socks about 3-4 pairs. So this year I'm thinking of making my own Shoe covers or of old tires and tubes. First I would start with making a laye that would fit around my shoe with the old tubes. I was thinking of making them to completely cover my shoes. I would make laces of course. As the second layer and if needed I would add extra protection by useing the thick tires. I would cut them up and add them with either expoxy*. I plan on starting this project tomarrow. I wondering if anyone has done anything similar to this and what you used and how you did it. I might even have enough to make some wind garuds for my hands or even fenders. I like to try to save money any way I can and this seems to be a great way to use old stuff that I would normaly just throw away or recycle. Thank you for reading. Ride on.

I'm glad I spent $25 on my winter booties. They've been great 3 years running. Buy 'em large.
I appreciate the hand made stuff though. Don't forget to post pics of your shoes.

I made toe covers BITD-
From car inner tube, fitted and glued with contact cement to fit over toe clips. The toe straps laced through holes to keep them in place.
Worked well as I recall....
