I'm looking to buy a PowerTap Pro. Since I'm new to the powermeter game I don't know where the deals are.
I've scoped out Amazon, eBay, and the standard cycling sites. Is there a 'go-to' place for powermeters?

I got my PT used off of another forum's classified (slowtwitch; tri people LOVE to turn over gear). Got a pretty solid deal, and now that I am getting a quarq I am passing my PT onto a friend of mine for an even deeper discount.

If you are comfortable buying off of ebay, with its inherent risks, you can get excellent deals there.

If, instead, you like the quality/guarantee/convenience of buying new, a number of online sellers make nice PT wheels for reasonable prices (neuvation, wheelbuilder). Or you can go to a custom builder (certain highly active members of the forum).

I thought it was competitive cyclist for a while? It's pretty awesome that the new PowerTap pros are lighter than my old 2.4SL
I see one on ebay for 700 bucks right now FWIW. No computer though of course.

A whole brand new powertap wheelset is at performance bike for $1100, or you can find older powertaps on slowtwitch as has been mentioned. Of course, if you have 0 posts over there, you can't send PM's and people may be reluctant to ship you a $600 item.

All the "steals" for new powertaps are done and gone, the opportunity for that has been missed. They were blowing out the previous gen during that time.

While we are at it, I'm about to list a 1 year old Power Tap Pro+ laced to an Open Pro with DT Swiss 14 gauge spokes. I was thinking 675 with the hopes of selling it for at least 625. Realistic? Its in great shape and true.

It is, I have almost the same (mine is an Elite+) with CPU hoping to get about the same.

I bought my first PT wheel off of ST. Blind trust, but if you pay via paypal at least you have that behind you as long as you do not pay as a gift. I paid $550 for an SL/OP wheel, new trainer tire, tube, skewer, fresh batteries, and wrench. I paid $88 for the ANT+ updater to turn it into an SL+ and then sold that for $50. I ended up replacing the bearings and freehub as well. I sold it for what I put into it to upgrade to a Quarq, then I bought a second SL+ wheel from a member on another forum for $625 with a Kinlin rim for the commuter bike.

i've seen some of the wired units go for prices that i am comfortable with. are the old wired units still viable or is ant + the only way to go?

I recommend ant+.

realize that you are purchasing something that's at least 3 years old and would require $350 to repair if something goes wrong

I bought a used wired PT a couple of years and 20,000+ mi ago and have yet to have a problem. If you do buy used ask the seller to provide the zeroed torque readings and ideally have them to a 'stomp test'.

no, they are reliable, but it's asking a lot of a 4-6 year old unit. wireless wheels could be had for $550.

Partially true. When I first got mine I had been pre-conditioned by reading BF and doing some online calculators to think that my watts would be about half of what I otherwise would have expected. I was actually doing a bit better and I was at about 3/4.

What I also learned is that I had very poor fit aerodynamically speaking.
